The genealogical data in these pages is accurate to the best of my current (at the time of writing) knowledge. This means it is of very variable reliability, since sources at one extreme are 100% certain (e.g. I know who I married, where and when, and the identity of my parents) to the mere rumour level, such as LDS data extracted from the IGI and Ancestral File, and reminiscences of elderly relatives, some now deceased. Sarah Jane BALL (photo 21,179 bytes) was my wife's paternal grandmother. She was born 17th October 1872 at 43 Lake Street, Lower Gornal, Staffordshire.
On 22nd November 1902 she married Francis Shaw at St. John's Church, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. She gave her address at this time as 52 Westfield Lane, Mansfield, the same as that of her bridegroom.
They had 7 children, Lily, Harry (born 24th March 1905 at 63 Westfield Lane, Mansfield), Leonard, Gladys (born 14th January 1909 at 32 Smith Street, Newark), Francis, Walter and Edith (born at Smith Street, Newark). Francis and Walter both died in infancy. The photo shows 32 Smith Street.
The couple remained in Mansfield at least until 1905, possibly longer, but by January 1909 they had moved to 32 Smith Street, Newark, Nottinghamshire, where she died on 31st January 1941. The death certificate records the cause of death as "Acute endocarditis" and "Acute bronchitis".
On Christmas Day 1858 he married Sarah Jane Bate at St. James's Church, Lower Gornal. They lived, from no later than 7th April 1861 (census day) until at least 17th October 1872 at 43 Lake Street, Lower Gornal (called Lake Lane in the 1861 census). By April 1881 (census) they had moved to 15 Humphrey Street, and at some later date to 12 North Street, his address as recorded at his burial in January 1898.
They produced at least six children: Mary Ann (born about 1860, and described as a nailer, aged 11, in the 1871 census), Alfred (born early January 1861 or late December 1860 but missing from the 1871 census), Ben (born 1862-1863 - at some point he moved to Mansfield), Isaac (born 1868-1869 - he also moved to Mansfield), Sarah (born about February 1871) and Sarah Jane (born 17th October 1872).
John Ball died in January 1898, and was buried on 19th of that month at St. James's Church.
On 29th July 1816 he married Sarah Fellows at All Saints parish church, Sedgley. They had seven children, Thomas (baptised 12 Jan 1817), James (25 Aug 1819), William (31 Mar 1822), John (9 May 1824), Eliza (21 Oct 1827), Elizabeth (17 Sep 1830) and Samuel (born 15 Jul 1833, baptised 24 Oct 1833). Sarah was buried 15 Jun 1836.
Following Sarah's death, he married again to widow Hannah Naylor (née Jukes), who brought with her two children from her first marriage, Abel Naylor (baptised 30 Mar 1833) and Amelia (born some time between 1820 and 1826). This marriage took place at some time between June and December 1836. Son Isaac was born 29th December 1836, having almost certainly been fathered by Hannah's first husband Isaac Naylor, and a second son, the John mentioned above was the only other child of this marriage. Hannah died 26 November 1840.
By the time of the 1851 census he had married again, to a Mary (maiden name not yet discovered), and they had two more children, Ann then aged 7 and David aged 2. It would appear from those ages that they married at some time between Hannah's death in 1840 and Ann's birth in 1843 or 1844, most likely in either 1841, 1842 or early 1843.
