Damian's annual carbon footprint (estimated)

Based loosely upon:

[cjd] Mark Lynas, "It's Carbon Judgement Day", The Guardian, 24 January 2007

Numbers have been roughly estimated and loosely rounded, so when I write '=>' I mean 'approximately equals'...

Gas, electricity and car driving CO2 emissions are based upon estimated household consumption, and therefore include a 'divide by two' (i.e. to account for two adults in the household - Damian and Alison)

Natural Gas (@0.19kgCO2/kWh)
Assume ~400 hundred cubic feet (hcf) per year; of which ~150hcf water heating (all year round) and 250hcf space heating (mostly winter months)
assume 1hcf = 31kWh => 13,000kWh/year household natural gas consumption
13,000kWh/year (x0.19) = > 2,400 kgCO2/year
divide by 2 adults => 1,200 kgCO2/year/ddnb due to natural gas consumption, of which approximately 450kg is due to water heating and 750kg is due to space heating

Electricity (@0.43kgCO2/kWh)
Assume ~2,700 kWh/year consumption x0.43 => 1,200kgCO2/year per household
divide by 2 adults => 600 kgCO2/year/ddnb due to electricity consumption
(made up of refrigeration, lighting etc.)

Car driving (@0.2kgCO2/km)
Assume ~20,000 miles/year total over both cars => 32,000km => 6,400kgCO2/year per household
divide by 2 adults => 3,200kgCO2/year/ddnb due to car driving

Flights and general consumption of 'stuff' are calculated on the basis of one person only

Flights
These figures are rough estimates, and include business flights
Assume flying is twice as efficient per passenger mile as driving => 0.1kgCO2/km

Total for flights => 3,000kgCO2/year/ddnb

General consumption of 'stuff' [cjd]
Based on a profile of "I'm fairly thrifty, but buy new things when I need them and get most of my food from supermarkets"

Total consumption => 2,000kgCO2/year/ddnb

The grand total
Add up the numbers above, and we get a grand total of 10,000kgCO2/year/ddnb

According to the 'Carbon Judgement Day' rating [cjd], this puts Damian into the category of:

"D 9,000-12,000kg You're an overconsumer. Sort it out now!"

Not so eco-friendly now, are we Mr. Bevan!

Still, at least I managed to avoid falling into one of the categories of:

E 12,000-15,000kg Carbon criminal
F 15,000-18,000kg Tony Blair
G 18,000-21,000kg Typical American
H 21,000+ Jeremy Clarkson

I should hope not!

Now then, the breakdown into the various categories looks like the following:

Which gives an interesting indication of where the real savings are to be made...
