Walking Group

WBC's walking group was set up in August 1994 by Sue MacLeod (Esher Green Baptist) and Val Tarbitt (Walton Baptist Church) with the following aims:

  • to meet together as friends
  • to bring together Christians and non-Christians
  • to enjoy the gift of God's creation and to keep fit!!
The group was formed for anyone who likes walking, whether they be teenagers or grandparents. Currently we aim to do one Sunday afternoon walk and one longer Saturday afternoon walk every month. Most Bank Holiday Mondays we also do a walk when we go further a field.
We take in all sorts of terrain - hilly and flat, coast and countryside, passing through woodland and farmland and discovering interesting hamlets and places off the beaten track.
Over the last 12 years lots of people have joined us, some are still participating while others have moved away. This of course gives us the opportunity to visit them and do walks in a new area. On a yearly basis we visit the Isle of Wight, Swanage, south coast and in 2006 Pulborough was added to the list. Bank Holiday Mondays are ideal for these visits!
The youngest person to join us was only 2 weeks old and came with mum, and the oldest was over 90 years old and did half a walk! Many lovely friendships have been formed and we are certainly much fitter!

Anybody is welcome to join us, there is no need to belong to a church. We have an interesting mix of people from various areas, although we mostly come from Esher and Walton-on-Thames.

We have had some great holidays together - West Wales, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset.

Sponsored walks, usually on a yearly basis, have raised money for houses in the Philippines and Rwanda, and a well, play area and showers for an orphanage in India. We have also raised money for the Bible Society.
The organiser is Val Tarbitt, who can be contacted via the church office.
