After witnessing the deadly accuracy of Eldar ships (and
the Navy's problems in shooting them), the Adeptus Mechanicus began research
on improved tracking systems. Unfortunatley the highly advanced Eldar systems
proved almost impossible to replicate, but some important progress was made,
with the construction of the first Sensor Targeting Matrix. The Sensor
Targeting Matrix is a mass of complex energy tracking systems, far more accurate
than conventional Imperial equipment, but also considerably bigger and needing
vast amounts of power.
The STM system could not be fitted on a normal ship (its size and power demands
would render the weapon systems useless) instead a new ship type was commisioned
to mount the equipment and relay targeting information to nearby Imperial craft.
The Dauntless Class Light Cruiser was used as the basis of the design.
Stripped to a minimum defense level and fitted with the STM, the Sentinel Light
Cruiser would supply invaluable tactical information in battle.
