Representing the first of the Railbus orders, the Class 141s were a direct development on the Class 140, (Which was termed appauling by BR management), which incided a lot more modificaitons to the suspension system, door ways and a complete restyling of the body. Featuring Leyland National bus body sections, thest trains were narrower than most DMUs (Except Hasings stock!). They were orignally fitted with Leyland turbocharge TL-11 engines, which produced around 205hp output. More than suited for a bus, but not a railbus and prone to trouble. The units were not liked by passengers and crew, for its confort and lack of acceleration and coupling up with other DMUs proved near impossible, due to their coupling types. Consigned to lines around Yorkshire, these railbuses almost drove everyone off the rails, but were popular with mangement, due to their low operating costs.

In 1988, they were refurbished, gaining a lot of equipment. No evidence suggests the interior was refurbished. (from my research, they used LT style bus moquette, although I have yet to see an interal image), and 141 113 was selected for re-engining trials, with a Cummins engine. Delivering a much more reasonable 230hp output, this unit became popular with train crews for its faster acceleration (helped by the low body weight). However, refurbishment or reliablity modifications didn't save the class entirely, withdrawals started in 1994 and one unit, 141 118 was selected to become a weedkiller, "Flower".

However, this was short lived and in 2003, 13 or so buses were snapped up by a buyer, Iran Railways. Modifications incided replacing the BSI coupler with screw link couplings(!) and middle eastern style buffers(!!). The only explanation for this, is that it could of been for rescuing purposes.

Only 2 units have been reported scrapped amazingly! 141101 (believe to be) and 141104. The latter because 141104 got involved in a collisoin around 1993. Even more amazing, the units that didn't get exported, stayed in the UK and found homes on several preserved lines. One in particular, 141 106 has recieved another livery variation, Choclate and cream.

List of things to do:

Since most of the model is now considered complete, as of 01/09/2007, using a new body shell, I have decided to remove the linkls to the old Class 141. It is still available on request however.

The newer 141 features a newer bodyshell and has many advances over the original and Version 2 of the model. There maybe a version for evaluation in the future however, when it comes to more detail requirements.
