60 Years
The Somerset County Orchestra is please to be celerbrating 60 of continuous playing. This makes us the longest continually operating amateur orchestra in the country.
The Somerset County Orchestra is an amateur group, based in Taunton, Somerset. They meet on Tuesday evenings at 7.00 for a two hour rehearsal with a short break of around ten minutes. Different local conductors are invited to conduct concerts, and it is they who make the final decision on that concerts programme.
The SCO exists to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of the art and science of music by the presentation of public concert and recitals. The orchestra for each concert is formed from the membership as required and rehearsals take place in the weeks prior to a performance. In addition to these rehearsals are repertoire evenings where members rehearse music which is not intended for immediate public performance.
Rehearsals are at Archbishop Cranmer School, on the Eastern side of Taunton town centre. Concerts are normally in or around Taunton, at local venues such as churches, schools and colleges. All concerts start at 7.30 unless otherwise advertised.
The Somerset County Orchestra is registered charity number 288482
