James Gillingham, Surgical Mechanist & Manufacturer of Artificial Limbs

Derrick Warren

210mm x 210mm

125 pages

illustrated with original 19th century photographs

£9.00 post free

Gillingham was a boot maker living in Chard who specialised in surgical boots. He encountered many deformed and injured persons, often with dreadful injuries involving loss of limbs by machinery with no safety protection. He saw that the official replacement limbs they had received were extremely crude, heavy and often all but useless and soon realised he could do a much better job using shaped leather and also developing truly articulating joints. He experienced difficulty getting established with the medical profession but as time passed and the effectiveness of his limbs and supports became known even medics started to refer people to him. Luckily, Gillingham was also a proficient photographer and a remarkable collection of sometimes rather macabre pictures exists, a selection of which illustrate the book.

NEW
A Field Guide to Exmoor's Early Iron Industry

Lee Bray

Illustrated by Anne Leaver and Jayne Brayne

£5.00 post free
Published May 2010 by Exmoor National Park Authority

The Iron industry reached its peak on the Brendon Hills of eastern Exmoor during the 19th century, but has a much longer history stretching back at least to the Roman period and probably into the Late Iron Age. Evidence can still be found across Exmoor, with some remarkable sites remaining as earthworks that shape the landscape we see today. This book will appeal to those who are interested in Exmoor's industrial past. It gives an overview of what we know about the iron industry on Exmoor from the late prehistoric to the medieval period, with useful descriptions of the geological background and the iron production process. It conveniently guides visitors to locations where they can experience the industrial archaeology in the field.
