EXPRESS/HDF5 Mapping V0.1 Published
Initial work on the use of HDF5 for the binary representation of EXPRESS-driven data has been completed. A new page dedicated to the EXPRESS/Binary Support has also been added.

MOF of EXPRESS for ODM documents added
Initial work on a MOF model of EXPRESS for the OMG Ontology Definition Metamodel project has started. A new page dedicated to the EXPRESS/UML Support has also been added.

Evolution to broader scope initiated.
The exff project began life as "exPRESS for free". We've decided to broaden its scope to include tools related to systems and software engineering and information architectures beyond EXPRESS and STEP. This interim release of exff is a first step in that direction.

Semantic Web Page and Better UML to OWL support added
The exff UML-to-OWL capability has been updated and the mapping documented. A new page dedicated to the Semantic Web has also been added.

Better EXPRESS to UML support
The exff EXPRESS-to-UML capability has been updated. These changes begin to bring e2u into alignment with the ISO 10303-25 EXPRESS-to-UML mapping. Highlights of the update include:

  • support for SELECT types;
  • support for defined types that are simple types;
  • two options for mapping simple types to UML;
  • initial use of OCL for some redeclared attributes;
  • a parameters file to allow control of some aspects of the mapping.

An "Open Source for STEP" Wiki
A group of developers interested in coordinating on Open-Source developments around STEP/EXPRESS, UML-related tools, Web-related tools and IDEs has been having discussions in the background. We've created an Open Source for STEP Wiki to help focus our thoughts and record our finding. Please contribute with any requirements, tools or random thoughts.

exff 0.1a released
exPRESS for free Release 0.1a is now available. This release includes a new capability for transforming EXPRESS and UML into OWL - the language used for the Semantic Web (see the white paper for more). This release also extends the capability of the EXPRESS-to-UML transforms to cover more of EXPRESS.

2003-07-14

exff 0.1 released
exPRESS for free Release 0.1 is now available as an open-source project on SourceForge. Initiated by Eurostep, the project is aimed at integrating the ISO EXPRESS language into UML and IDE tools for software engineering that support the XMI standard for schema/model interchange.
