GRANT WAKEFIELD - BIOGRAPHY

Whilst working as ticket-tearer at the DUKE OF YORKS cinema in Brighton in the early 1980’s, Wakefield embarked on a 50 min. Standard 8mm hand-cranked KOYAANISQATSI style epic. By the time he finished he’d become duty manager. After 3 years of watching films it was time to branch out. He took a five week summer course at the WEBBER DOUGLAS ACADEMY OF DRAMATIC ART, hoping to keep the family stage tradition alive. An unmitigated disaster, he thenceforth dedicated himself to a life behind the lens.

As a member of Brighton’s LIGHTHOUSE FILM + VIDEO in the late 80’s and early 90’s, he undertook numerous roles on in-house projects as production assistant, photographer, spark, gaffer, sound recordist and, increasingly, camera assistant and operator. His association with LANGAUAGE ARTS PRODUCTIONS saw him work as gaffer on 3 corporate videos, and shoot 5 educational films in the UK, Ireland and the US, on DV and Beta SP. His interest became ever more focussed on the camera department, and particularly film. Several jobs as a 16mm and 35mm clapper / loader then followed for such companies as ZENITH and BLUEPRINT, as well as a 16mm focus pulling job on a locally produced independent feature.

In 1994 Wakefield gained a place at the NORTHERN SCHOOL OF FILM AND TELEVISION where he trained as a cinematographer. A very busy year saw him shooting four 16mm shorts of his own, as well as working as gaffer on two films, and focus puller on five films for other students. He also organised the school’s first ever 35mm production, and was the camera operator on the school’s Fuji Film Scholarship entry which won the MGM distribution prize. Immediately after graduation Wakefield received a wild card entry to the 3rd EUROPEAN MASTERCLASS FOR CINEMATOGRAPHY STUDENTS, held in Budapest, where he trained under Billy Williams BSC and Vilmos Zsigmond ASC.

On his return to the UK he landed his first job as a focus puller on a 35mm feature: BOB’S WEEKEND. He then began a long association with London based MUSO PRODUCTIONS, focus pulling and camera operating on 16mm and 35mm commercials and pop promos for bands including WAY OUT WEST, DEATH IN VEGAS and ORBITAL. 1997 saw him shooting the video segments for the BALLANTINES URBAN HIGH tour, featuring THE SEAHORSES, SKUNK ANANSIE and THE PRODIGY. He also shot 35mm pick-ups on feature films for RENEGADE PRODUCTIONS and Canadian director Denys Arcand.

Later that year Wakefield commenced work on his own DV documentary project CROPPIES, later broadcast by WGBH Boston, CHANNEL FOUR and CARLTON DIGITAL. In 1998 he headed up 2nd Unit Cinematography for the UK’s first ever 8 perf. 70mm production: LOST KINGDOM.

Around this time he became increasingly involved in the Iraq issue and the anti-sanctions movement, travelling to Baghdad in April of 1999. Two films emerged from this trip, a news piece for Miriam Ryle’s SANDMAN PRODUCTIONS and a public service film that Wakefield distributed free of charge. Footage was later used in THE NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA's documentary about artist Deryk Houston ("From Baghdad to Peace Country"), in former UNSCOM weapons inspector Scott Ritter's documentary ("In Shifting Sands") and by NBC news.

A further collaboration with Ryle led to the creation of THE FIRE THIS TIME, a 77 minute audio CD that chronicled the fate of Iraq and was released by HIDDEN ART RECORDS in 2002 to critical acclaim.

Since the CD’s completion he has continued to work as a DoP, gaffer and operator, including shooting a short for the Irish Film Board. Early 2005 saw the creation of a laptop based capture / edit / DVD authoring system, on which he produced TWO THOUSAND AND 4, a concert / music film for BANCO DE GAIA. Most recently he shot the short films ALL ABOUT ME on Hi-Def, and JAKE’S JUSTICE on DVCam. Both featured extensive Glidecam work.

Wakefield’s other interests include large format films, photography and radio. To date he has attended seven IMAX conferences world wide, developing several large format projects of his own. Many of his photographs were published in various magazines and books during the 1990’s. In 1993 he hosted and mixed four shows on Brighton’s FESTIVAL RADIO. Since 2002 he has produced, mixed and hosted three radio shows for London’s much admired RESONANCE FM, centred around the subjects of Iraq, and propaganda in democratic societies.

He has available a basic broadcast quality production and lighting kit based around a Sony Z-1 Hi-Def camera with full body Glidecam rig.
