In an article published by NEW YORK NEWSDAY, March 31st 1991, was the story of a 'battle' that took place on March 2nd, two days after the ceasefire, between a 7000 strong Iraqi force and a patrol of the US 24th mechanized infantry division, led by General Barry McCaffery. NEWSDAY obtained a tape from the US military which contained scenes of wholescale slaughter of the Iraqis, and a sequence where one US serviceman can be heard saying: "Say hello to Allah!" before opening fire.

I tracked down the journalist who obtained this tape and wrote the article, Patrick Sloyan, but I think miscommunication led him to believe that the project was very much a commercial venture, so he wanted a lot of money for it. Despite numerous attempts I was unable to convince him otherwise. Sloyan is a very fine reporter who distinguished himself with some of the very best coverage in the US media about the Gulf war, so I couldn't be angry with him. However, I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who can identify a different source for this tape, or persuade Patrick to let me have a copy to post on this site.

In 1977, US Senator Henry Jackson's Energy and Natural Resources Committee concluded:
"A US commitment to the defence of the oil resources of the gulf, and to political stability in the region constitutes one of the most vital and enduring interests of the United States."

On July 31st 1990, a question and answer session between Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs John Kelly, and Representative Lee Hamilton, took place in a Congressional sub-committee:

HAMILTON: Do we have a committment to our friends in the Gulf in the event that they are engaged in oil or territorial disputes with their neighbours?

KELLY: As I said, Mr. Chairman, we have no defense treaty relationships with any of the countries. We have historically avoided taking a position on border disputes or on internal OPEC deliberations, but we certainly, as have all administrations, resoundingly called for the peaceful settlement of disputes and differences in the area.

HAMILTON: If Iraq, for example, charged across the border into Kuwait, for whatever reason, what would be our position with regard to the use of US forces?

KELLY: That, Mr. Chairman, is a hypotheical or a contingency, the kind of which I can't get into. Suffice it to say, we would be extremely concerned, but I can not get into the realm of 'what if...' answers.

HAMILTON: In that circumstance, is it correct to say, however, that we do not have a treaty committment which would obligate us to engage US forces?

KELLY: That is correct.

Can anybody provide confirmation that the US made radio broadcasts into Iraq after the war directly to encourage an uprising in the South. If so, when were these broadcasts made, and who made them/what was the 'station' called? Does anyone have recordings of these broadcasts?

Can anybody confirm that the US attempted to flood, or indeed flooded, the Iraqi economy with counterfeit currency just after the war, and if so, what timeframe did this take place in, and who authorised it?

When did former US Secretary of State James Baker, prior to the Gulf war, say  "We will return you to the pre-industrial age.." and who did he say it to?

When did General Norman Schwarzkopf say "The US might obliterate Iraq..." and who did he say it to?

Can anyone confirm that Queen Elizabeth of England arranged for an honorary knighthood to be hand delivered to Schwarzkopf after the war, and if so, when?

Can anyone confirm that the CIA conducted a detailed study of Iraq's foreign food dependence PRIOR to their invasion of Kuwait. How many months/weeks prior? What were the study's conclusions? Who commissioned the study? Who was it reported to and when/where?

On March 3rd 1991, Andy Rooney, anchorman of the CBS '60 MINUTES' news programme delivered this astounding editorial:

"There are some good things about war sometimes. Everyone accomplishes more in time of war. Our hearts beat faster, our senses are sharper ...[....]...This war in the Gulf has been, by all odds, the best war in modern history, not only for America, but for the whole world, including Iraq, probably."

This edition of '60 Minutes' is not publicly available in the CBS back catalogue. Bizarrely you can obtain a transcript of the programme, but not the programme itself. Do you know anyone in the US who archived the war on videotape who might have recorded this edition of '60 Minutes'?
