About Us

Spinnaker formed in July 2004 with a membership of 25. From the early days of our existence we are very grateful to Sally Tomkins for being instrumental in our foundation and helping us find our Musical Director, Mike Taylor.

Though Spinnaker is a relatively new group, many of its members have been singing barbershop for a number of years. We also have new-comers to barbershop who have been involved in the hobby for less than a year. From teenagers to 70 somethings, Spinnaker brings together all ages. Several of our members have family ties with each other.

The picture below tries to summarise what Spinnaker believes in (hover your mouse over the text for further explanation); these are the principles which guide us in what we do, and define our preferred future. If they ring a chord with you, then you will fit right in!

Education and learning are vital as we strive to be as good at barbershop singing as we possibly can be. We learn all the time, and teach each other too. Education is part of all that we do. When Spinnaker first started it was with one focus and desire - to compete and get as high as we possibly could. This remains a key driving force in what we do. Singing together is more fun than you can possibly imagine, but singing well is so much more so. We don't do this for money; the fun and laughter is what keeps us coming back for more. Barbershop is more than just about singing. Through singing together we form bonds and friendships which are important to us in all parts of our lives. We aim to be respectful of each other, honest, trusting, caring, friendly: all things you would expect between good friends. It's not enough for us just to achieve what others have achieved before. We want to be different; we want to break the mould. Spinnaker will develop as a unique group, and dare to take a different path. Choruses are big because they are good, not good because they are big. We want to grow to be a big chorus, but by maintaining a high bar. We attract members who sing well enough for us, and want to join us because we sing well enough for them.
