Let's recap - The 2007 Straw Race - It was wet (AGAIN!)

2007 saw yet another successful Straw Race. We had 170 teams, who turned out despite the messages of doom coming out of the Met Office. Those magnificent and strangely dressed men, women and children braved what is locally referred to as “torrential drizzle” to complete the course. As always the locals were out in force showing their support together with hundreds of visitors.

Between them the teams in the 2007 Race raised an amazing £10,000 which was distributed to eleven local charities in November. The money raised makes such a difference to the lives of so many local people.

Now £10,000 is a lot of money, but we, the members of the Oxenhope Straw Race Committee, know you can do better than that. So come on, if you’re up for the challenge and make 2008 the best Straw Race yet.

Just a note to our regular entrants - Because of some macho men in very fast cars, this year’s race has been brought forward a week to Sunday 29th June 2008.

What is the Oxenhope Straw Race??

The Oxenhope Straw Race takes place every summer in the Pennine village of Oxenhope, near Keighley. It was started by two men who, made a bet about racing from one pub to the next carrying a bale of straw.

It has gone from strength to strength, raising around £300,000 to date. The money is raised by teams collecting sponsorship for completing the course, often in fancy dress, whilst carrying a bale of straw and visiting each of the local pubs in the village. It is great day out with a real carnival atmosphere!

The sponsorship money is collected in by the Straw Race committee, and in November it is distributed to local charities. Various other fundraising events take place throughout the year to add to the total money raised.
