What Are Shaded Pole Electric Motors?

The Micro-Motors shaded pole electric motors are 2 pole squirrel cage motors for operation with a single phase AC supply. The motors operate on the basic principle of induced magnetic fields when connected to an AC voltage. The simple, robust and maintenance free construction of these motors makes them universally applicable driving elements in all fields of electrical engineering, machine appliance and apparatus control.

The main characteristics of these motors are quiet operation, maintenance free and long service life.

The absence of brushes or a commutator prevents any electrical / radio frequency interference (EMI), making the motor particularly suitable for applications that are close to sensitive electronic or computerised systems.

All motors run in the 2-pole version with a voltage range of 12-400 volts AC, and frequency supplies of 50MHz or 60MHz, giving an approximate unloaded motor speed of 2900 and 3500 RPM respectively.

Micro-Motors Standard Motor Specification

Micro-Motors continues to up-date both the manufacturing process and standard specification of their electric motors by using materials that conform to Class F (155°c) or Class H (180°c) insulation to VDE 0700 / EN 60335. All electrical materials used in the manufacturing process at Micro-Motors conform to world-wide approvals (UL;CSA;VDE;BeaB, etc). All our shaded pole motors are constructed to meet the requirements of VDE and CEE standards. Motors built to other standards such as UL or CSA can be supplied.

Our standard motors are wound for 230 Volt 50 cycle, however if specified, voltages from 12 Volt to 400 Volt can be obtained. Furthermore, dual voltage motors are available e.g. 115/230 Volt for 50/60 Cycle regulation can be supplied.

Motors can also be designed for a number of output speeds eg at 230 volts 50 cycle the customer may require a 4 speed motor. This can be obtained by winding the coil with tap outs and when coupled to an external switching device will enable the speed of the motor to increase or decrease to the specified operating speed.

Specific Requirements for Customer Design

All micro-Motors shaded pole motors can be supplied with either sintered or ball bearings

Both bearings are maintenance free. Sintered bearings are suitable for operating temperatures from -5°c to +85°c. Ball bearings are suitable to withstand operating temperatures from -10°c to 100°c. They can either be mounted in a high temperature resilient material for noise sensitive equipment or direct mounted into the bearing housing.

Shaded pole electric motors can be adapted without problem to varying operating conditions. For use in harsh environments where the coil can be subjected to high levels of condensation, the motor coils can be protected by encapsulation and the shaft material specified as stainless steel.

It is important to remember that all motors are designed to be enclosed within the final product. The final application should be designed to allow sufficient heat dissipation from the motor. All motors can be supplied with cooling fans, which effectively cool the motor windings and bearings., which in turn will considerably increase the life expectancy of the motor.

Built in thermal protection devices are available on request, and these can either be supplied as a one-shot thermal fuse or an auto-resettable thermal protector.

Mounting the Motors to the Required Application.

Most motors are available with a choice of bearing brackets. Tapped holes in the bearing housings are provided for motor mounting. the holes on the Motor Stator Housing can also be used, however, when mounting the motor this way or in a close fitting housing which is composed of magnetic material, magnetic shunts can occur which could result in a reduction of output from the motor.
