Standing out from the Crowd

Leys Badminton Club in Witney achieved BADMINTON England Silver Club status, equivalent to the Sport England Clubmark. Certificates were presented by Chris Johnson, Sports Development Officer for West Oxfordshire District Council, and Nicki Gilder, County Badminton Development Officer. She said: ‘Accreditation demonstrates a strong coaching programme and effective management. It shows that Leys takes child welfare and equality very seriously.’

Mrs Gilder continued, ‘Leys’ involvement with the Oxfordshire Youth Games is a beacon of excellent partnership with local schools and the sports development team from WODC. Both the local authority and the School Sports Partnership are proud to add you to the list of accredited clubs.’ Leys are only the fourth badminton club out of 39 in the county to achieve Silver Club status.

Silver Clubmark for Leys

Leys is proud to announce that the we have achieved BADMINTON England Silver Clubmark, reflecting our commitment to developing badminton for all, especially our coaching programme for junior members. This has involved hours of work to produce our folder of 'evidence' that we can tick all the boxes BE demands and achieve their high standards.

Close fought tournament to end winter season

Jenny Killingbeck and Henry Mo have won the Ladies and Men’s trophies respectively for the Leys end of season badminton tournament, so ably organised by Alan Lees on 25th April. Well done again!!

Angela Baker was a very close runner-up in the ladies, only 1 point behind Jenny’s 78, while Chris Moloney came third with 65. The Men’s results were slightly more spread out. Andy Killingbeck scored 90 to win second place, with Pat Edginton only 6 points behind in third.

Congratulations to juniors Louise Martin, Jack Bullivant and Simon Le Good. Jack came in joint fourth place with Adrian Iley with an impressive 82, closely followed by Simon Le Good in joint sixth place with Norman Stewart with 81. Louise took fifth place with 63 points, only 1 point behind Judith Le Good in fourth.

Special thanks goes to Alan for organising the event so well, a task made even more difficult with late withdrawals (sorry about that Alan!).

Feb 2007
Congratulations to Louise
Louise has been performing very well in the Oxfordshire Under 17 A squad and learned at the beginning of February that she has been selected to represent the county at the annual ICT tournament in Nottingham This is a four-day event which takes place in April and places in the squad are highly prized. Congratulations Louise!

Jan 2007
Congratulations to Judith

Judith has been appointment as Community Sports Coach (Badminton) for West Oxfordshire. She will take up her appointment after the February half term and will be looking at bringing more badminton into schools, but also aiming to create more opportunities for adults to play. A huge challenge but look what she’s done with our juniors!

Dec 2006
On 7th December 2006, at West Oxfordshire District Council - Achievement Awards evening Jean Kloos of the Witney Leys Badminton Club was awarded  WODC Coach of the year in the Sports Catagory. These awards are for people showing commitment, dedication, and real promise in their chosen field of sport or the arts. There is a Higher Achievers category for those who go on to show considerable progression and demonstrate excellence.

Lucy Fisk along with David Richardson have made the Badminton England Level 3 grading (ie Bronze) in their age group. Suzy Frindle was already Level 3 graded. This reflects their winning performances at the junior tournaments around the country (and the huge commitment of their parents in getting them there!). We can be very proud of Leys juniors! Congratulations!
