Introduction

This set of pages has been restructured to make it easier to navigate and faster to download, as well as incorporating very much more content - it was getting too big, and was not well organised, a consequence of steady growth from small beginnings.

Each topic is now only summarised on this page, with the detail on other, reasonably small, pages. Comments are invited.

The genealogical data in these pages is accurate to the best of my current (at the time of writing) knowledge. This means it is of very variable reliability, since sources at one extreme are 100% certain (e.g. I know who I married, where and when, and the identity of my parents) to the mere rumour level, such as LDS data extracted from the IGI and Ancestral File, and reminiscences of elderly relatives, some now deceased. Anyone wishing to make any use whatever of this information is therefore strongly advised to contact me for source details.

Some of the genealogy pages on this site contain little or no data at present. To save you frustration I have marked links to such pages with the symbol NO.

Descriptive alphabetical index

To make it easier to find your way round these genealogy pages, I have now created a descriptive alphabetical index as a separate page.

My personal family history - people and places

This set of pages covers the people and places involved in my and my wife's family history. It includes a list of surnames, ahnentafels, problem areas, geography and history of the places where some of our ancestors lived, and associated genealogy/family history resources related to those areas, as well as potted biographies of some of our ancestors.

The surnames (direct ancestors only) are (plus many variants): A'COURT, ADAMS, ARCHER, ASHTON, ATHEIS, BADGER, BAKER, BALL, BARNES, BATE, BELLOWES, BERIMAN, BOLTON, BRIDGES, BROWN, BUGLE, CAMMELL, CHERRETT, CHURCHOUSE, COLE, COLLIER, COTTERILL, DICKISSON, DORREL, DREW, DUKE, DYE, EDES, FISHER, FOX, GERRARD, FRY, GLAZZARD, GRIFFTH(S)/GRUFFYTH, HANCOCK, HARDY, HARRIS, HEMSON, HILL, HOPKINSON, HUTCHINSON, JASPER, JEFFERIES, JONES, JUKES, KING, LACY, LANGLEY, LILLINGTON, LONGFORD, MABELL, MALL, MARSH, MORGAN, NAILER, PEARSON, PRINCE, REED, RIPPINGALE, RIPPON, SAY, SEYMOUR, SHAW, SILK, SMITH, STONE, TINSLEY, TOWNSEND, TRUMAN, VALENTINE, WARD, WARREN, WATTERS, WEST, WHITTLE, WILCOX, WILLETTS, WILLS, WOODHOUSE, WOODSFORD.

Where there is a link from a name it is to a page of biographical details about the all the people with that surname in my family tree, including a few who are not direct ancestors. The amount of such detail varies considerably. I will add others as time permits.

The places concerned are all in England, in the counties (as defined 1889-1974) of Derbyshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Leicestershire, London, Montgomeryshire, Norfolk, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Yorkshire (West Riding) NO.

I have set up a separate page giving a full list of all the counties, towns and villages included.

General genealogy and family history

This section is concerned with genealogy and family history research in general, regardless of geographical location. It is aimed mainly at beginners to internet genealogy, but parts could be of interest to the more experienced.

==================================================

Mailing lists

A little page explaining how to find genealogy mailing lists, how to join them and how to use them.

==================================================

Newsgroups

Many newsgroups are available to the genealogist, but since I have no experience of using them as yet, I am not the person to be writing about them. Sorry - perhaps one day, when I have time...

==================================================

Newsletters

There is a number of free genealogy newsletters available by email. This page tells you how to get onto the distribution list for some of them, and a summary of what they have to offer.

==================================================

Acronyms

I have produced a short list of acronyms and glossary of terms which have caused problems for me or others. A more comprehensive glossary has been produced by Bob Hatcher

==================================================

Relationships chart

If you want to find the relationship between two people, you can look it up on this chart.

Buying in foreign currencies

Genealogists often find it necessary to buy things (family history society memberships, transcriptions of records, copies of certificates, books, etc.) from countries other than their own. Two problems arise in doing this. One is to understand what the cost is in your own currency when it is quoted in a foreign one, and the other is to find a way of making the payment without incurring exorbitant bank charges when credit cards are not accepted.

Solutions to both these problems can be found on my General Useful Resources page.

==================================================

Other web sites

There is now a vast number of web sites dealing with aspects of genealogy. This page gives a rundown on some of the more important ones, including some which specialise in keeping an up to date comprehensive list of sites. Every site on this list is described, so you can see if it is likely to be useful to you before you visit it.
