Flitwick Town Centre Consultation

Flitwick Town Council is consulting about the future of the town centre. You have a chance to tell them what you think – please go along to the library between now and December 14th. It’s important that as many local people as possible give their views. The local Green Party has its views, but we would hate for them to win through just because not enough ordinary local people responded. We would also like to know from you whether you agree or disagree with us. Please let either Gareth Ellis or Malcolm Bailey know.

Flitwick Station

Greens support the transport interchange idea, and having a new foot- and cycle- bridge that will give lift access to the station platforms. Please tell the council these are good ideas!

A multi-storey car-park at the station may reduce car-parking on the streets around the station, or may just increase traffic to and from the station, leaving the car-parking on local streets. More should be done to stop commuters parking on local streets. Extra parking at the station for those cars is fine. Extra parking for extra traffic is another matter.

Tesco

The Town Council is proposing that Tescos is enlarged. Is this a good idea? If it works, it could help attract more people to the town centre, keeping the town centre alive and vibrant. If it doesn’t, it could mean more traffic with people driving to Tescos who don’t go anywhere else in the town, while competition from Tescos drives local shops out of business. We want the centre of Flitwick to be more than a big Tescos, a railway station and a car park. Greens say local shops and local suppliers are better.

Leisure Centre

We oppose building a leisure centre on the only town centre green space. New facilities at the current location is a better option. The separate consultation on this topic can be found at http://www.midbeds.gov.uk/Leisure_Arts/Leisure_Facilities/Flitwick_Leisure_Facilities_Consultation.aspx.

Design & Housing

Greens welcome the plans for homes above shops. The pressure from the Government for extra housing here is ridiculous, given the amount of empty space above shops in Bedford and Luton, and all the empty offices there. If we must have extra housing in Mid Beds, the best place is above shops that are being built anyway: but the council must make sure they aren’t left empty! We are also looking for more sustainable construction wherever possible (more well-insulated wood, less concrete), and lots of use of roof space for solar electricity generation.
