Welcome to

Please note that this is a large site and it is impossible to provide a direct link to every page from this introductory one. If you know which page title you are looking for, I strongly recommend you go to the map of this site, which shows the site structure and gives a direct link to every page from its title. I will try to find time also to create an alphabetical list of pages by title, but it isn't available yet.
When references to other pages are marked
this indicates they (or a subordinate page) have been updated in the last month (approximately). I'm sorry I'm not able to keep all the pages properly updated - pressure of work keeps me reluctantly away. I am currently doing some reorganising to make the sequence of subjects more logical (I hope) and to make the whole site more user-friendly. Real content update is still slow, but accelerating. Keep calling back.

I believe web pages should be accessible to all browsers, even very old ones. Click this link to see my Web Site Design and Browser Compatibility Policy.

If you really want to know about me and my present family (poor you).
For anyone following the Nottingham alumni web ring, you will find the link on this page.

Some info about my children's ancestry and some of the places their ancestors came from, links to relevant mailing lists and web sites, discussion of available sources, and a few photos.
This set of (206 at the last count) pages has separate (many multi-page with numerous photos) sections, for example, about each of the counties and some of the towns and villages, pages of biographies of many of the people, transcriptions of various original records, etc., and it is (I hope) all fairly easy to navigate through to find what you want. An alphabetical index of subjects (not comprehensive at present - I'm working on it) should also help.

Unorthodox ideas on pure science that (I think) deserve more serious consideration (and a couple that perhaps don't).
Only one (serious one) so far, which I have been harbouring for many years. Serious physicists interested in the fundamentals of the universe please take a look and let me know what you think.
Plus a personal account of my viewing of the total eclipse of 11th August 1999 in France and a photo of the transit of Venus on 8th June 2004.
Also a few interesting links.

Intended to become a discussion from a radical, open-minded but somewhat left of centre viewpoint of many aspects of both philosophy and politics, plus links (if/when I find any worth including). At present a statement of some basic principles, a short discussion of the proposals for greater integration of the European Union, including the proposed monetary union, and some cartoons. Includes an interesting relevant link.

Odd notes, thoughts and even semi-planned proposals for my own garden, with information about plants (both ornamental and (eventually) edible), soil preparation, pests and diseases, organisations and magazines, mostly with a UK emphasis but with a particular interest in exotic plants that may be persuaded to grow (and over-winter in the garden) here - a tropical jungle of palms, bananas, bamboos, 2 foot arum flowers and more in Bedfordshire, England! Not only that, a variety of flowers in the depths of an English winter.
For anyone following the Palms web ring, you will find the link via this page.

A few bits and pieces you might find mildly amusing, with links to other sites. Judging by the counters I used to have, this is by far my most popular page.

I have created a new page - A Diary of Thoughts on Various Issues - to which I am adding (dated) thoughts on a variety of subjects, many of them political but also quite a few on various aspects of what I consider to be misuses of the English language, mostly but not always as they become topical.

These sections are small either because that is their inherent nature or because I have not yet had time to put in all I intend to include. More details of each are included on my Miscellaneous Small Items page. I give below a simple listing of their titles:

I would like to know what you honestly think of this web site. Constructive suggestions for improvements are particularly welcome. Please don't just say it's wonderful - I wish it was, but I know it's not that good. I want to learn how to improve it, and I can only do that if you tell me what you really think of it. Also, I need to know if any external links no longer work.
However, the suppliers of my guestbook appear to have terminated it without notice. I apologise for the fact that it has not been working for a time, and also to those who may have left messages while it was working, but have not heard from me.
Please, therefore, contact me by email, which I check most days.

The image map and the drop down list selection methods above were written just to practise producing them - not very helpful to people with text only browsers and/or no Javascript! The layout below is the format you will find on other pages (as soon as I get it incorporated into them all - more work in progress!).
In all areas feedback is invited by email and (with permission, appropriate acknowledgements, etc.) may be included when possible and appropriate. Links restricted to users of commercial providers such as Compuserve, AOL, etc. will not normally be included.

Most sites seem to have a note about the software used to create them, so here goes:-
