Introduction

This page contains a surname index to some 17th century Nottinghamshire parish registers, with links to the relevant detailed entries. Users should be aware that these are transcriptions of LDS photocopies of the original registers, and like all transcriptions may contain errors. They should therefore be used only as a guide, and entries of interest should be checked against fiche copies of the original registers.

==================================================

The following text, extracted from the fiche, gives some background information about these particular registers:

The 17th Century transcripts here printed are written on strips of parchment of various sizes, and are tied up in one bundle and kept in the muniment room at Southwell. They are fifty in number, and in fact that they are all for about the same period, ranging in date only from 1614 to 1641, points to their being mearley a remnant of a large series of such documents once in keeping of the chapter.

Indeed so many of them being for the same years such as 1623, 1638 and 1641 looks as if they are but a few remaining members of the former bundles for those years ( the transcripts in Bishops registers are usually tied up in years, not in parishes) the vast majority of their comrades having long disappeared. The bundles for all the years between 1641 and 1716 are also lost, while even then only a few stragglers are found until the end of the quarter of the 18th century is reached.

Meagre thought these remains are, they are yet in some instances of great genealogical value, for in several cases, such as Caunton, Holme and North Muskham, the extant parish register do not begin until the 18th century, so that these few transcripts are all the record we possess of the Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials in these parishes for the years given.

Spellings are as in the original source, so may not always be what you expect. If you are checking, inspect carefully for alternative spellings.

Browser compatibility statement

I believe web pages should be accessible to all browsers, rather than surfers being browbeaten into switching to some particular browser to see a page. (How many people would be happy if popular TV programmes could only be watched with the latest model of one particular make of TV set?). I am currently going through this site trying to achieve this as far as possible, but I do not have any means of testing it with all the dozens of browsers out there. When I think I have managed it with a page I'll include this paragraph at the end and a suitable logo at the top. If you have trouble viewing any page on this site, especially a page including this paragraph, please let me know (
see my contact page), and tell me what browser (name and version) and what operating system you are using, so I can try to do something about it. Thanks.
