Here Comes Humanity Dick

Excerpt from Chapter 2 - January 8th 1971

The sound of all these voices talking at once now died to an almost cemetery hush till one man standing with a large group of men near the selling arena said, "Now 'ere's the man who can tell us what it is .  Come 'ere mate and 'ave a look at this."  The men with him stood to one side revealing the inside of the sale ring and there stood the biggest cow I had ever seen.  It was whitish in colour, in fact very similar to my skin at that moment in time.  It had a huge lump at the base of its neck that sort of flopped over to one side.  I had seen this animal before on the television, in pictures and in books.  Now I knew it wasn't a Jersey cow, or a Guernsey or a Friesian.  Why couldn't it have been one of them?  No it had to be this enormous, unrecognisable beast - yet if I had seen it on television that night I would have said to Sandra straight away what it was.  But it wasn't on the television.  It was standing right in front of me at Melton Mowbray Cattle Market on my second day as an RSPCA inspector.
