Updates:
See what I’ve been up to in the
Porter Brook!
14th May 2005 *Upload* Catching up with some of the new stuff.
New Pictures Grey Heron
Ducklings
New Pages Dipper
Fixings There have been complaints that
some of the pictures are too big to fit on some of your screens, so I’ve
resized the bird pictures. The others will follow. Please e-mail
me your comments on how this looks.
I’ve put some backgrounds on the bird pages. Hope this isn’t (a) too slow
loading (b) too difficult to read. Let me know…
The Birds
Index should now load faster – I’ve reduced the quality of the thumbnails
so it looks not so good but should not take ten minutes to load.
12th May 2005 I followed the Porter from Staples Car Park to the
Leadmill, picking it up along St. Mary’s Way, under Matilda Street and round
the back of the BBC building where it disappears under the Sheffield Archive.
This was just an explore – no camera today.
11th May 2005 Vicki was at the hospital so Eleanor and I went hunting for
dippers with better results. The Wood Anemones are all gone but the wild garlic
is in flower. The Friends of the Porter Brook with the Rangers and Yorkshire
Water have been clearing wood out of the brook in Endcliffe Park and the
stepping stones have been set in place again.
8th May 2005 Vicki, Eleanor and I walked to Forge Dam (where people
were fishing) for Bacon Sandwiches. On the way we ere surprised by a heron fishing in The Holmes Wheel Pond in Endcliffe Park.
The elusive Dipper was again sighted, and some more in-focus but dark and
far-away pictures were gleaned.
1st May 2005 Welcome
to the new Updates Section. This is for return visitors to the site, to let you
know what (if anything) has changed on my Porter Brook Explorations. You may
even get handy links to the new stuff, if there’s not too much of it.

links for the New Maps, to Ordnance Survey, should work now.
Exploits Yesterday
Vicki, Eleanor and I tracked the Porter Brook downstream to just before
Waitrose, before visiting the Friends of the Porter Valley on their
Conservation Week Stall in town. We picked up their geological and historical
survey along with some of their ecology material. It was rainy, so no new pics.
On the way to town we stopped off at the Heritage Museum and met a lady called
Margaret Oversby, who knew a great deal about Sheffield History and showed us
some maps, which we may be able to get copies of at the Sheffield Archive.
Vicki got a book about medics who had died and been buried in the Sheffield
Cemetery.
A
few days ago I went birding and found a dipper, just above Shepherd Wheel. No
good pictures yet, but I’ll keep trying.
