AGM 2012
On Wednesday, 18th April, 2012 President David welcomed forty members met in the South Beach Hotel for the club’s Annual General Meeting, Dinner and Prize-giving. In his report David thanked the members for their help and support during the year and commented on the fortunes and otherwise of the club in the various competitions. This had been one of our more successful seasons for some time. We had better results in the day leagues this season where Grant Donald's rink got promotion from League E to D; unfortunately Kirsty Letton's rink narrowly missed promotion from League C by one point whilst Julia Craig's rink managed to maintain their position in league D. Friday the 16th December was one of our most successful days for a very long time as we won the Ross Low Trophy for the first time. Meanwhile another TPCC rink was at Greenacres representing the Ayrshire Province against Renfrewshire Province in the Harry Hart Trophy competition which we duly retained - having previously won it last year. At the Stranraer weekend one Troon rink again reached the final and was narrowly beaten by a rink from Mauchline. In our Forest Hills inter-club game it was TPCC’s turn to take the honours. David thanked the office bearers and committee for their extremely hard work, with special thanks Wendy, Linda and Mary for their support over the last two seasons. Mary gave the Secretary’s report while in the absence of Wendy Alastair gave the Treasurer’s report and Linda the Match Secretary’s report. David handed the President’s role to Alastair, while Derek became the Vice-President. Wendy remains as Treasurer for another year.
After an excellent dinner served by the staff of the South Beach Hotel the prizes
were presented by Lillian McIntyre and Jean Storer was again in charge of the raffle
which this year again raised over £150.
The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Jimmy Forrest
in which he thanked the President for his handling of the AGM and the Committee for
their work throughout the season. Thanks were given to the members for attending
and the hotel staff for the enjoyable meal and excellent service
Stranraer 2012
This year’s sojourn to Stranraer last weekend was a great success. We had 20 curlers playing in 5 club rinks and 5 non curlers who organised trips out to local places of interest as there is a limit to how much curling you can watch!
As usual the curling, company and food were great. The quiz was - well the less said the better I think. Jimmy Forrest was in great demand as usual and Hatty had to fend off prowling ladies!!!
On the curling front we got off to a bad start with all five rinks losing their first matches albeit Jack’s was by a draw shot. We all fared better in the next two rounds with four rinks finishing with two wins and one loss unfortunately though only Jack's rink managed to qualify for the semi-finals where they beat a Mauchline rink. As last year we managed to have a rink in the final but again we just lost out by 7 shots to 5 against another Mauchline rink who were worthy winners over the weekend.
Jack’s rink was David, Aileen and Wendy who was playing with the delivery stick as she was suffering from sciatica - so well done Wendy. Whilst there is a winner there are always some less fortunate and Andrew Kerr’s rink of Fiona Bain, Mary Foy and Alastair Fyall lost their matches but still manged to have a good time.
In view of the success of the weekend we have provisionally booked again for next year and further details will be sent out in the next few days.
Coaching Clinic
Thanks to Kirsty Letton ten members of TPCC enjoyed a coaching session spread over three days. (5th, 9th & 15th January). The course covered the No Back Swing Delivery as well as handle release, sweeping, split timing and communication between players. The curlers deliveries were videoed so that they could see any slight faults and discuss how they could be corrected. There were also classroom sessions covering strategy and tactics. All agreed that this had been a worthwhile learning experience and would recommend it to their fellow club members. A special thank you to Kirsty for organising and supervising the clinic and to Ayr Ice Rink for the facilities.
