daughter of William Hall, tailor, and Rebecca (Richards?)
From C. Fielding:
I was able to trace Elizabeth Hall, wife of Joseph Kertland. My mother found a yellowed piece of paper with her birthdate and that of her sister's. Elizabeth was born March 19, 1825 to William Hall (a tailor) and wife Rebecca (Richards?) in Stepney, London. She was christened Feb. 17, 1843 at St Mary Whitechapel.
Before marrying Joseph Kirtland she had an earlier marriage to James Withers Titley on October 11, 1846 . James was a journeyman painter, born about 1822 in Shrewsbury and died August 3, 1851. He drowned "whilst swimming" in the Regents Canal. The two had one daughter, Elizabeth Amelia Titley born June 30, 1848 who married a William Gilbert (about 1843 to 1898) on Oct. 5, 1868.
Elizabeth Amelia was brought up as Joseph Kertland's stepdaughter. Joseph witnessed her wedding and Elizabeth Amelia's sixth child was named Joseph Kirtland Gilbert (1882 - 1890).

Family
info from Christine Fielding
By 1858, the Kertlands had moved to Greenhithe, Kent, where Joseph worked for the Coast Guard. His grandson, Arthur, said that his father claimed that he had been a harbour master at one point, but I'm afraid I have not turned up any such evidence. By the time Emma Esther Kertland was born on September 19, 1869 in Margate, Kent, Joseph was a pensioner from the coast guard (age 44).
He remained a naval pensioner the rest of his life and according to the 1881 Census, Joseph was a church verger living in Margate with wife. By the time his son Richard married on April 27, 1884, he was a lodging house keeper. And by 1891, the Kertlands (minus Richard) had moved to Marylebone Road. William worked as a cheesemonger's assistant and Emma as a library assistant. Joseph and Elizabeth continued to live with their son William, who by 1901 was an insurance agent. They eventually went to live upstairs from Emma and her husband Henry Hayes in Wood Green. Elizabeth died in early 1916 at the age of 90 and her husband followed her a week later.
