Before their party reached Red River, James performed a marriage, Christian Bannerman to Robert McKay, and a christening, Selkirk Thomas Douglas McKay, born to William and Barbara Sutherland McKay. On 10 Aug 1817 James was granted Lot 1 by Lord Selkirk. His name is included in a list of the settlers of Red River 1818, with a household of five. A note in the Selkirk Papers (p.6498) 1819 reports that "James Sutherland, called The Parson, went to York in Upper Canada to see his family there". There is no further record of him at Red River.
