A very valiant and typical British explore and pioneer..has just died at the early age of 38....seen more of Africa than any living man but Stanley..due to the effects of privation during the Katanga expidition of 1891...he published account in 'With Captain Stairs to Katanga'..(published by Sampson Low1893)..object to secure the country for the Congo Free State... from the tyranny of chief Msiri.....before the British South Africa Company..claimed it...stopping the slave trade...Dr. Moloney took command when all senior officers were dead or dying....the strong fort built by Dr Moloney enabled Captain Bea afterwards to establish himself firmly.
Last year he commanded an English expidition to the unexplored portions of the Chartered Company's territories west of Lake Nyassa, near Loangwe Rive, accompanied by Lieutenants Elwes and Biscoe RN and 7 other Englishmen. Not a shot was fired during the whole journey and four powerful chiefs were placed under the British flag. The notorious chief Mpseni, although due to Portugese influence declined to accept the British flag, showed a remarkably friendly disposition to Dr Moloney who stayed two days with the much-dreaded chief.
Theo Fraser went on this expedition also, as have a letter from Dr Moloney to him from Hora Camp dated 13 Sept 95, Officer Commanding, Rhodesia Concessions Expedition.
Have 1891 letter from Capt Stairs to Dr Moloney
Dr Moloney was I believe in the first Boer War, (inscription on mount of medal reads that a dying sergeant that he was caring for named Mollonney gave it to him as he had the same name)
