I am sending you a piece of the information I have concerning James Loraine Geddes, Dr. He is my Great Great Great Grandfather.

2-B James Loraine Geddes, Dr.
Born Scotland
Died 1804 Gibraltar yellow fever.
Anne Wilhelmina Loraine Married 18-Feb-1790 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scot.
Christened 13-Apr-1764 Daughter of James Loraine and Patricia Home.
Duns, Berwick, Scotland Granddaughter of Patrick Home V (?-1744) and Elizabeth Dickson.
Died 1804 Gibraltar Great granddaughter of Patrick Home IV (?-1717) of Broomhouse.
James was a native of Forres Gibraltar. He was a medical student in Edinburgh when he served in the capacity of doctor for the victims of a fever at Gibraltar during an epidemic. He and his wife died within three days of each other in the malignant fever which raged in the Garrison of Gibraltar in 1804. This left their five orphan-children totally unprovided for, and the Executors appointed by their father viz. Allardyce & Form and never accounted for the effects of the deceased, and totally neglected the charge reposed in them. The five were sent back to Scotland to be reared by their motherÂ's relatives who had to bear the sole expense of supporting and educating them. Perhaps his middle name was added after marriage to Anne Loraine. AnneÂ's wedding registry lists her as Wilhelmina - maybe a middle name or maybe she went by her middle name.

sherriff clerk of Berwickshire 18 Feb 1790
Anne was the daughter of James Loraine who was the sheriff clerk of Berwickshire, and Patricia Home of Angelraw, Berwickshire. James and Patricia had seven children all born in Duns, Berwick, Scotland:
1. Alexander Loraine Christened 13-Sep-1761
2. Hannah Loraine Christened 15-Nov-1762
3. Anna Loraine Christened 13-Apr-1764
4. Patricia Loraine Christened 16-Nov-1765
5. Margaret Loraine Christened 10-Feb-1767
6. William Loraine Christened 5-Aug-1768
7. James Loraine Christened 4-Apr-1776
Patricia was the daughter of Patrick Home V (?-1744) of Bughtrig and Langrig, and Elizabeth Dickson. In 1730 Patrick was made a Burgess and Gild brother of Edinburgh. Patrick and Elizabeth had three children:
1. William Home (1728-1794) Succeeded his Uncle Wm. in 1774 as owner of Broomhouse, m Jane Hunter, daughter of James Hunter, Esq. In 1745, while still a minor, he joined the army of H.R.H. Prince Charles Edward and was appointed cornet in Lord Balmerinos Regiment of Life Guards and afterwards A.D.C. and Standard Bearer to the Prince, and was present at the battles of Falkirk and Culloclen. After Culloden, he was taken prisoner, tried at Stirling for high treason and condemned to death. He was imprisoned for a time in Carlisle Castle and by the exertions of influential relatives he was reprieved and pardoned on account of his youth, but his family were very heavily fined, and all their property except Broomhouse was sold to pay his fine. The Prince, for his services, presented him with his miniature, medal, and quaich. He went abroad after his pardon, and served in Prussian Army under Marshal Keith and Frederick the Great attaining the rank of Colonel. He returned home in 1774 when his Uncle died and was served heir special in the lands of Broomhouse, April 7, 1774. He is buried at Edrom. William and Jane had:
William Home, Lt. in the Army, died in West Indies without issue.
James Home, Lt., (?-Dec-1849)
John Home (?-1817) Major in the Army. Died unmarried in East Indies.
Patrick VI o.s.p.
Helen Home married in 1799 Maj. George Logan (?-1826) of Edrom.
2. Elizabeth Home m. Simon Loraine, Esq. Duns.
3. Patricia Home m. James Loraine
Patrick V was the son of Patrick IV who succeeded his Uncle John II to Broomhouse in 1705. He was a writer to the Signet, a Burgess and Gild brother of Edinburgh. He got a charter from Queen Anne of the lands of Bastilrig (alias Abchester). George Home of Wedderburn wrote to him from prison at Marshallsea, 28th August 1716, regarding the estates of Wedderburn, Coldingham, Paxton, Kimmerghame, etc., forfeited by George Home for his loyalty to the Royal House of Stuart. He died in August 1717, leaving three sons:
1. William Home of Bastilrig succeeded his father in Â"Bastlerig,Â" Eyemouth, Peelwalls, and Blackburn in 1717, and bought Broomhouse from his brother Alexander in 1718. He died without issue, 25th October 1748, leaving legacies to his brother PatrickÂ's widow and son William and daughters Elizabeth and Patricia.
2. Alexander Home, who was left the estate of Broomhouse, sold it to his brother William and died without issue.
3. Patrick V who m. Elizabeth Dickson.
Note from Howard Geddes of Scotland: Â"one IGI record records James Geddes m. Wilelmina Lorain 18-Feb-1790 Edinburgh parish. In addition there are two other personal submissions with the same date and place and names but refining the spelling of Wilelmina and Loraine to Wilhelmina and Lorraine. Furthermore, Williamina Lorain is recorded bapt. 5-Aug-1768 Duns to James Lorain and Patricia Home. It is inconceivable to me that James Loraine Geddes/Anne Loraine and James Geddes/Wilhelmina Loraine are not the same couple. James Geddes probably did not start life as James Loraine Geddes - he might have taken Loraine as a second surname during his married life, he might even have used Loraine as a surname from time to time, and this implies that the Loraine family were perhaps more well thought of than the Geddes family. In other words, he married Â'upÂ'. (Actually, the son of Alexander Geddes and Isabel Noble did precisely that: baptized as Alexander Geddes, he used that name, as well as Alexander Noble Geddes and he even used Alexander Noble and named two of his children with only the Noble surname, before reverting back to Geddes, Here, too, I would imagine he married Â'upÂ'.)Â"
Memorandum from Alexander Loraine, brother of Anne (Loraine) Geddes:
As James had studied medicine (though at the time of the sickness in Gibraltar he was engaged in mercantile transactions) he offered his assistance, and, General Sir Thomas Griggs who commanded, considering Dr. Geddes as having lost his life in the service, very humanely endeavored without any application from their relatives, to procure a pension from the Government to assist these orphans in their destitute situation, he could obtain only 50# p. annum for the five, and requested my opinion as to its disposal. I proposed that the whole should be settled upon Anne Geddes, thinking her situation the most helpless, at same time saying that I and my sisters would do our best for the boys. Sir T. Grigge approved entirely of this arrangement and the pension was settled on Anne Geddes accordingly.Â" . .
Almost all my income being a Life one, I pay a considerable sum annually for Life-assurance, for my wifeÂ's benefit, who has made many sacrifices for my nephews. I mean to destroy the books I kept of my expenditure on their account, that no legal claim may be brought against them by whoever may be my heir, but they are bound in gratitude, if ever in their power, to show every affectionate attention to their Aunt Loraine, who will, if she survives me, be left so much worse in circumstances, in consequence of what has been expended on them.
Abstract of sums as within stated -
William Geddes # 401 17 8 ½
John Geddes 742 0 7
James L. Geddes 935 13 8 ½
Alexander Geddes 590 0 0

equally divided among them - share of each # 6 8 0
Int. for one year to 25th Mar. 1814 - less income tax 5 9 ½
Total 6 13 9 ½
Anne GeddesÂ' share was paid to my elder sisters for her use.
Note. Our relative Gl. Dickson sent no Donation either to James or Alexander Geddes - thoÂ' he did so to their two elder brothers William and John.
(Sgd) Alex. Loraine - Brother of Anne Loraine (wife of James Geddes).
(mentioned Anne had three sisters and a brother, but memo mentions brothers Alexander Loraine and James Loraine (there was also a brother William Lorraine). Several sisters mentioned but only Hannah named. W. Home seems to be Great Uncle of Anne Loraine on her motherÂ's side. Also mentions a relative by the name of Dickson. (AnneÂ's grandmother was Elizabeth Dickson.) It is through this family (Home) that the Broomhouse Castle comes).
