An exceptionally dry April. There were the traditional showers but much fewer and less intense than we are used to. 24.2 mm represents just 25.6% of the average April rainfall for the years 2000-2005. The rain on the last day of the month increased the month's rainfall, up until then, by almost a half. Incidentally most of that final 7.6mm fell on the first day of May but the idiosyncrasies of the Met Offices recording methods puts rain that falls up until 09:00 GMT on the first day of a month in the previous month. The dryness of the month is underlined by the fact that the previous driest April, since 1994, was that of 2003 when twice as much rain fell (49.9mm) than did during this April
