This month was the driest January since I began my records in 1994. The 24.5mm represented just 24% of the January average for the previous six years.
It is interesting that this winter was forecast to be an extremely cold one, perhaps on a par with those of 1947 and 1963, because of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). It had been suggested that what most authorities thought was an indication of global warming, record breaking hot summers in recent years, was merely the warm half of the NAO. Although this January has been colder than recent ones it is probable that the severity of the winter has been moderated by the greenhouse effect. The next few winters will prove interesting one way or the other.
