The fact that October had been the wettest month in each of the last three years was no guarantee that this year would be the same.
One thing we know about the British weather is that it is unpredictable. Climate change promises to make it even more so. Expecting that this October would be similar to the last three Octobers I would have put money on it being wet. Instead we have had the driest October since before 1994, when records began on this site. 39.2 mm represents just 26.3% of the average October rainfall - 149.1 mm - for the years 2000/6. The October with the previous lowest rainfall was that of 1999 when 64.8 mm was recorded.
