The driest May since records began at this site, in 1994, was that of 2001 when 23.7 mm was recorded. Until midnight on the last day of May this record was going to be bettered when the May rainfall stood at 21.5 mm. Since midnight, that is on the first day of June, 10.1 mm fell but because of the way in which rainfall is recorded by the Met Office, readings being taken at 09:00 GMT are allocated to the previous day, that rainfall was added to that of May.
31.6 mm, representing 42.7% of the average May rainfall since the turn of the century, makes it only a slightly drier month than last May when 34.2 mm was recorded.
Total rainfall for the first five months of the year is now 294.3 mm making it the driest January to May period since records began at this site in 1994.
