Nationwide this April has been declared the wettest on record. Although that of 2000 at this site was recorded as being nearly 10 mm wetter it must be remembered that a homemade gauge was still in use then and the data cannot be relied upon. The same applies to April 1998 with a measurement of 200.1mm.
April 2012 followed seven months when rainfall for each of those months was below the average recorded for those months, sometimes as in February when just 32.6% of the average fell. This contrasts with an increase of 158.2% over the 2000 to 2011 average of 64.2 mm.
On 16th April the Environment Agency declared that the South West was suffering drought condition. Of course that did the trick since then it has hardly stopped raining with over 138 mm having fallen.
