Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

This is used routinely on most patients as a means of maintaining muscle bulk, joint range, and encouraging active muscle movement if it is present. As an extension of this we often use the Salisbury Drop Foot Stimulator to enhance the walking of our Stroke and Incomplete Spinal Injury patients. Two of our physiotherapy staff are accredited users of this equipment

Based in Aylesbury (40 miles from the West End and Central London), Buckinghamshire,  the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, which is close to the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, patients with spinal injuries, head injuries, strokes and other neurological, orthopaedic, post operative conditions, sports and muscle injuries,  and other disabilities, are provided with comprehensive rehabilitation programmes geared to provide rehabilitation for maximum independence. Intensive nursing care and rehabilitation therapies are implemented by a multi-disciplinary team of dedicated professionals including specialist doctors and consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists. Their goal is to ensure that patients achieve their full potential for independence, and can return to as normal a life as possible.   With over twenty years' experience of disability and spinal injury management, the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital is qualified to achieve these aims. It is the loyal commitment of our highly trained and experienced medical staff, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists that accounts for our continued success.
