Walkabout Callipers: a practical way to walk

We are the leading Spinal Injuries Unit in the UK for teaching walking in the Walkabout Orthosis. This device, developed in Australia, is like all full length callipers, very easy to don and doff, can be used with any shoes, but gives complete stability at the hips and allows the user to stand and balance without having to hold on, therefore allowing the hands to be used for other activities. Thus, walking using a Walkabout can be more functional. If our patients are interested in calliper walking they are assessed and fitted with the most appropriate device, then duly taught to walk on all surfaces, and if possible to go up and down stairs.
