As the new bowling season starts Shiplake members are looking forward to a busy summer. A Shiplake member – David Bullock – is serving as Oxfordshire Bowling Association President this year – a great honour for the club. This will be marked by several county events to be held at Shiplake. The membership has been boosted this year by a number of bowlers from Stuarts, the Henley club that sadly closed at the end of last season.

Captain Wendy Cross was in charge of the first match of the season, which took place on Saturday against Maiden Erlegh. It was a glorious sunny day which tempted out several spectators who were able to bask in the sunshine on the patio whilst watching an entertaining game. Iain Robinson, supported by Sylvia Blackmore, Peter Cross and Joe Wylie, built up a commanding lead of 18 shots to 2, then allowed the opposition to come back to 18-10, before getting back into their stride and finishing with the best score of the day. Alan Newbury’s rink battled to keep in touch until the 16 th end, after which the opposition failed to score and final score was 20-13. Shiplake won on 4 rinks and the final score was 103 shots to 77.
