11 September
On Wednesday afternoon Shiplake welcomed PEPPARD for a friendly game of six rinks. David Webb skipped the highest winning rink. David, with Pat Walker, Wendy Buss and Eddie Goddard won by an impressive 27 shots. Shiplake only lost on one rink (by just one shot) and won the match 139-95.

Shiplake’s weekend of competitions started on Saturday with the club’s Drawn Fours. Thirty-six members took part and two finalists emerged after an exciting afternoon’s bowling. Dave Hall, his son Jack, David Webb and Wendy Buss played John Chamberlain, Bryan Clark, Dave Buckett and David Steel. Fine lead bowling from Jack Hall set his team on the path to victory, and they won 7-3. The names Dave Hall, Jack Hall, David Webb and Wendy Buss will be engraved on the trophy for 2007.
Sunday was Shiplake’s Finals Day. Play started at 10:30 and finished at 5:30, and the fine weather and a high standard of bowling ensured an enjoyable day for participants and spectators.
In the Mens Singles Barry Lambourne got off to a flying start and established a comfortable lead, going on to beat Jim Bland 21 shots to 6.
The Ladies Singles pitted Val Beaumont against Jean Buckett. Val soon moved into the lead and she won 21-6, adding the title to her other successes this year.
In the Two Wood Margaret Bullock played David Hall. David won the first set and Margaret the second. In the third set they went into the last end 6 all. Margaret held her nerve to get the one shot she needed for victory.
The Senior Citizens was fought out between John Chamberlain and Len Mitton. The game was close for eight ends, at which point the score was 7 all. Then John didn’t allow Len to score again, going on to win 16-7.
The Handicap between David Hall and Wendy Cross was a close fought contest. The score was 15 all after 15 ends before David found that little bit extra and moved ahead to win 21-16.
In the Novices Pat Steel played David Buckett. A tight game saw Pat move steadily into the lead and win 21-14.
David Bullock played John Snook in the Handicap Plate. This was another game which was level half way through – 10 all after 6 ends. Then David moved up a gear and went on to win 21-13.
Jim Bland and Sonia Stretch played Howard West and Edna Orchard in the Drawn Pairs. No one dared predict the result as the scores showed 12 all after 16 ends, 14 all after 18 ends and just one shot separating the pairs going into the last end. But Jim and Sonia hung on to win 17-15.
In the Married Pairs Val and Trevor Beaumont played Jean and David Webb. The Webbs built up an early lead and although Val and Trevor remained in touch they could not catch up. Jean and David emerged the winners 19-12.
4 September
Shiplake took five triples to Burghfield on Saturday for the last MUL game of the 2007 season. Accolades for the highest winning triple go to Val Beard, Peter Christmas and skip David Hall, who won by 11 shots. The contests were closer on other rinks – with David Webb’s triple scoring two shots on the last end to snatch victory by one shot. Shiplake won 91shots to 78, and returned home with 10 MUL points, enough to make absolute certain of winning the league for another year.

For the second away game of the weekend Shiplake took four rinks to Blackbird Leys. Daphne Jacob handed in the best card of the day. Daphne, with Wendy Buss, Sonia Stretch and David Buckett won by six shots. Pat Main skipped the only other winning rink. Here the score was 20 all after 20 ends, then Pat, whose steady play throughout the game had kept his rink in contention, drew in two shots to seal victory. So two winning rinks apiece, but Shiplake lost the match 64-90.

On Tuesday Shiplake ladies played an Oxfordshire Womens Bowling Association side. The visitors, drawn from clubs from across Oxfordshire, were captained by Shiplake member and OWBA president Mairwen West. Margaret Bullock, supported by Janet Stockwell, Pat Walker and Elaine Roberts, skipped the home side’s only victorious rink, winning by 7 shots. Shiplake lost the game 97-117. A group of men prepared and served the meal, others manned the bar and many came to watch the game. The ladies much appreciated this support from the Shiplake men.

After their success in the ODBL (becoming Division 2 champions) Shiplake men played away against Banbury Central in the semi-final of the league cup. A close fought game saw the Banbury side win by 10 shots and progress to the final.
Shiplake took five triples to Harwell on Saturday for an MUL game. Jim Bland skipped the highest winning triple. Jim, with Val Beaumont and Simon Hastings won by 18 shots. Three further triples, skipped by Daphne Jacob, Barry Lambourne and Trevor Beaumont all won handsomely, contributing to a Shiplake win 113-53, and 10 MUL points.

On Sunday Huntley and Palmer came to Shiplake. The Huntley and Palmer club has been in existence for over 100 years but sadly is soon to be disbanded. This last game between the two clubs was reduced to four rinks and four Shiplake ladies (Helen Robinson, Daphne Jacob, Jackie Stafford and Sue Reid) played for the visitors. Shiplake won the game 77-62.

The annual Ladies v Gents took place on Bank Holiday Monday. Over forty members took part, playing for the Margaret Evans Cup. The keenly fought game saw every shot scrutinised and accusations of intimidation and worse echoed round the green! Daphne Jacob with Julia Perry and Pat Steel won for the ladies, and the ladies drew on one further rink. Ryan Buckett, with his son Jodie and Howard West, skipped the highest winning rink for the men. The result was a win for the men, who thus retained the cup for another year.
21 August
On Tuesday Shiplake entertained 20 men from the Caversham 41 Club. This fun evening is now a permanent event in the fixture list. After 15 ends or so, played in a constant drizzle, everyone adjourned to the club house for fish and chips.
On Wednesday Shiplake were at home for a six rink game against Woodley. Once again the rain intervened and the game was abandoned after 10 ends.
Shiplake’s last game in the ODBL was away against Oxford City and County B. The Oxford side needed a good win to avoid relegation but Shiplake, already league champions did not relax and at one stage looked likely to take most of the points. However the home side made a strong finish and won on three rinks. But Ryan Buckett with Darren St John, Iain Robinson and Roger Worth took the lead from the start and won by 13 shots, which gave Shiplake victory by 5 shots, and 3 ODBL points.

On Saturday Shiplake held their drawn triples competition. Thirteen triples battled in the rain, playing for the Millenium Cup. The two finalists, who had both won all their games, then played six ends to decide the winner. The final was between Eddie Goddard, Margaret Bullock and Val Beard against Barrie Evans, Howard West and Ed Jukes. Eddie’s triple proved the stronger and the names Eddie Goddard, Margaret Bullock and Val Beard will be on the cup for 2007. After the game members enjoyed a barbecue, provided by Peter Higgs and helpers.
Shiplake travelled up the M4 to BA Concorde on Sunday. It was raining (again) and the game was stopped after 15 ends. Daphne Jacob with Peter Christmas, John Snook and Charlotte Jacob achieved the best score of the day and won by 14 shots. Bob Beard’s rink snatched victory by one shot. Shiplake lost overall 59 shots to 69.

A memorable week for Shiplake. The men became champions of Division 2 of the ODBL and two ladies progressed to the semi-final of the National Over 55s Pairs competition at Leamington.
Shiplake’s week started on Wednesday with a Plomer Cup game at home against Watlington. Barrie Evans, with Phil Buckett, Val Beaumont and Bill Blackmore, soon built up a substantial lead and barely faltered on their way to a 26 shot victory. Two other rinks also quickly moved into the lead. Jim Bland’s rink went on to win by 15 shots, and Daphne Jacob’s rink withstood a late challenge to win by 3 shots. Final result – a win 115-88, and 8 Plomer Cup points.

For Thursday’s ODBL game Shiplake’s men took the long trip to Banbury Chestnuts. The Banbury side were league leaders and 5 points would have seen them league champions. However this was not the scenario that developed. Skip Ryan Buckett with Darren St John, Len Mitton and Roger Worth had the best score of the day, winning by a massive 26 shots. Dave Hall’s rink also had a good win. Everything hinged on the score on Jim Bland’s rink where they started the last end on level terms. Jim drew in his last wood to give Shiplake 2 shots. This meant 5 ODBL points for Shiplake and the league championship.

Shiplake’s busy week continued on Friday when they entertained 5 triples from C. F. Taylor. Best card of the evening was handed in by Alan Melville, who, with Janet Stockwell and Ann Clark won by 15 shots. Peter Higgs’ triple won by 6 shots. Much closer games took place on the other rinks where scores were level at the half way point, but at the end Shiplake had won one (by 1 shot) and drawn one. Final result 94-75.

On Saturday Shiplake travelled to Rover (Cowley) for a six rink match. Club chairman Phyllis Mansfield was captain of the day. Best score of the day was on Mick Lovejoy’s rink. Mick, with Pat and Angie Main and their grandson Josh, was 10 shots behind after 14 ends, then the Shiplake side rallied and won by 7 shots. Shiplake had two other winning rinks, Les Redding’s rink won by four shots and David Webb’s by three shots. Wins for Rover on the other three rinks gave Shiplake victory by just 2 shots 113-111.

Shiplake took 4 rinks to near neighbours Wargrave on Sunday. Wendy Cross skipped the highest scoring rink. With Francis Benham, Max Jacob and Bob Beard the rink got off to a slow start then went up a gear to win by 13 shots. Although Shiplake lost narrowly on the other three rinks the final result was a win for Shiplake by one shot – 72-71.

This week Shiplake’s Sylvia Blackmore and Val Beaumont represented Oxfordshire in the Over 55s Pairs at the English Women’s National Championships at Leamington. Their first game was on Friday, where they beat two ladies from Hertfordshire. On Saturday morning they won again, beating Hampshire, which qualified them for the quarter-finals in the afternoon. Here they met and vanquished Middlesex. The semi-final was on Sunday morning against Nottinghamshire and here our ladies bowed out of the competition. However to win through to this stage was a terrific achievement and many congratulations are due to Sylvia and Val.
31 July
Shiplake fielded two teams on Saturday, one home and one away. The home game was a five triple friendly against Twyford. Best score of the afternoon was from the triple skipped by Phyllis Mansfield supported by Eric Davis and Pat Steel. Level at the half way point the home triple moved up a gear, scored freely (including a six) and won by 9 shots. Bob Beard also skipped his triple to victory. There was one drawn rink and Shiplake won the match 83-76.

Shiplake’s away fixture on Saturday was an MUL game against the University of Reading. The triple of skip Daphne Jacob, Len Mitton and Simon Hastings was the highest winning rink – they led from the start and won by 8 shots. A second win on Barrie Evans’ rink and a draw for Trevor Beaumont’s rink (after dropping four on the last end!) meant Shiplake travelled home with just five MUL points.

David Webb, Daphne Jacob and David Bullock also skipped winning rinks. At close of play the final score was very close but as one Shiplake member was unwell and withdrew half way through, the game was declared an honourable draw.

Shiplake were at home on Wednesday evening for a six rink game against Suttons. Barrie Evans skipped the highest winning rink, with Helen Robinson, Jack Hall and club captain David Steel the rink won by 4 shots. Further wins for the rinks skipped by Iain Robinson and David Webb meant three wins apiece, but Shiplake lost the match 116-132.

For Thursday’s ODBL game Shiplake were away at Cotswold. After 16 ends Shiplake, who had started the game as league leaders, were down on every rink. Then the rinks skipped by Barrie Evans and Jim Bland managed to turn things round and win by two shots and one shot respectively. Shiplake travelled home with just 2 ODBL points.

On Saturday Shiplake travelled to Goring for an MUL game. The game was interrupted by rain and only one rink managed to complete the 21 ends. The only winning rink was that of captain of the day Trevor Beaumont with Helen Robinson, Len Mitton and John Chamberlain. The rink took an early lead and won by 19 shots. Mixed fortunes on the other rinks finished with both losing by 4 shots. Shiplake won the match by 64 shots to 53, and returned home with 6 MUL points.

On Wednesday evening Pangbourne brought five triples to Shiplake for an MUL game. Graham Kennedy, with captain David Steel and Val Beard, led from the start and won 21-10. Barry Lambourne’s triple had an even game up to the 13th end, then scored 11 shots without reply on the last five ends to win by 9 shots. Two further wins secured 10 MUL points.

Final result – 6 ODBL points, putting Shiplake just half a point behind the league leaders.

The Quarter and Semi Finals of the OWBA Singles took place on Saturday. Shiplake was well represented – Mairwen West and Val Beaumont had won through the previous rounds but now had to play each other for a place in the semi-final. Val won the quarter final, then after an exciting and close game, just failed to win the semi-final. Another Shiplake member – Charlotte Jacob – is in the last 32 of the National Under 25s. The remaining rounds of the competition will be played at Leamington. Shiplake is very proud of these achievements which add to other successes this year and ensure that the club maintains its high profile in the county.
On Saturday, for the first of the weekend’s two away games, Shiplake travelled to Maidenhead Town for a friendly game of five rinks. David Hall with Val Beard, Jackie Stafford and Peter Christmas, took an early lead and won by 8 shots. Iain Robinson also skipped a winning rink. Bob Beard’s rink drew, so 2 wins apiece but Shiplake lost the match 86-110.

Six Shiplake triples journeyed across Reading to Tilehurst on Sunday. Trevor Beaumont, Sylvia Blackmore and Eric Davis took three shots on the first end, setting the pattern for the game which they went on to win 22-6. Two further wins for skips Peter Christmas and Phil Buckett did not provide quite enough shots to win the match, Shiplake lost by just 4 shots.

On Wednesday evening Shiplake travelled to Hurst for an MUL game. The triple of Jim Bland with John Chamberlain and Edna Orchard won by 7 shots, the best score of the evening. Victory for the visitors on three further rinks ensured an overall win by 10 shots 83-73 and Shiplake returned home with 10 MUL points, enough to keep them at the top of the table.

On Thursday Shiplake ladies Sylvia Blackmore and Val Beaumont played the county final of the National Over 55’s at Shiplake. An exciting game saw them race ahead, wobble a bit in the middle then forge ahead again to win comfortably. Subsequent rounds will be played at Leamington. Congratulations to Sylvia and Val for this achievement.
On Saturday Hook came to Shiplake for a friendly game of six triples. Phil Buckett with Ann Cox and Max Jacob led from the start, and held off a late challenge by the opposition to win by one shot. Barrie Evans with Pat Walker and Janette Macarthur staged a great recovery – 11-2 down at the half-way point they fought back, scoring a vital shot on the last end to win 18-17. Elsewhere the game was far from friendly and Shiplake lost the match overall.

On Wednesday evening Shiplake were at home to Henley for an MUL game. Graham Kennedy with captain David Steel and Charlotte Jacob achieved the best score of the day – winning by an impressive 31 shots. Good wins for Jim Bland’s and Barrie Evans’ triples ensured victory for Shiplake by 127 shots to 79, and 8 MUL points.

On Sunday morning Shiplake ladies travelled to the other end of Oxfordshire, to Banbury Central, for the semi-final (for the county) of the Top Club competition. Margaret Bullock had a close game but maintained her 100% record in this season’s competition, winning 21-19. The triple of Daphne Jacob, Jean Webb and Val Beaumont came from behind to win. Unfortunately the Pair and Four didn’t fare so well – so two games apiece and victory went to the Banbury side on shot difference. The ladies are to be congratulated on their best ever performance in the Top Club Competition.

Jim Bland’s rink looked to be heading for defeat, then four shots on the last end gave them victory by one shot. Shiplake lost on shots 61-68, so took just two ODBL points.

Black clouds were all around, but although rain fell during the tea break and after the match, miraculously it stayed dry while people were on the green. Skip David Webb with Sonia Stretch, Wendy Buss and Simon Hastings, scored 12 shots before the opposition got going, and went on to win by 9 shots, the best score of the day. Wins for Iain Robinson and Graham Kennedy ensured victory for Shiplake by 108 shots to 99.

Shiplake member Mairwen West is president of the Oxfordshire Women's Bowling Association for 2007. On Tuesday 19 June she held her President's Day at Shiplake. Delegates of every club affiliated to the county, OWBA officers, past OWBA presidents and some Shiplake ladies had been invited to take part. Members of the club worked hard behind the scenes to ensure every aspect of the day went well. Visitors enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch and a lavish tea. The weather was perfect for the afternoon's bowling. Some of the proceeds of the day went to Mairwens's chosen charity for her presidential year, the National Ataxia Foundation.

On Wednesday evening Shiplake travelled across town (some by a circuitous route) to Suttons for a six rink friendly game. It was a damp evening and when the drizzle turned to heavy rain the decision was taken to finish the match a few ends early. Skip Bill Blackmore, with Sonia Stretch, David Buckett and Eddie Goddard, started with a four on the first end and never looked back, winning 25-15. Barrie Evans’ rink also won by 10 shots. Two further wins ensured victory for Shiplake by 109 shots to 84.

On Sunday morning Shiplake ladies played the second round of the Top Club Competition at home against West Witney. Margaret Bullock gave the home team a dream start – winning her Singles game 21-2. The Rink moved steadily ahead as the morning progressed, finally winning by 13 shots. In the Pairs game the visitors overcame a poor start to level the score at 19 ends, but the Shiplake duo held their nerve and won the last two ends. Victory in three of the four games was enough to win the match. The next round is the semi-final of the county stage of this competition which Shiplake will play away against Banbury Central on July 1st.

On Wednesday Shiplake travelled across the water to Island Bohemia. Skip Daphne Jacob with John Snook, Peter Higgs and David Bullock achieved the only positive score of the evening, although two other rinks came very close to victory. David Hall’s rink lost by just one shot. Mick Lovejoy’s rink had a comfortable lead, then the opposition scored 10 shots on the last three ends to snatch victory. The final result was a win for the Island by 32 shots.

On Wednesday Palmer Park came to Shiplake for an MUL game. The triple of Jean Webb, Iain Robinson and Barry Lambourne were first off the green, having notched up a good win. Unfortunately the remaining triples were unable to emulate this feat, and the final result was a win for Palmer Park by 96 shots to Shiplake’s 81, and 10 MUL points to the visitors.

On Sunday morning Shiplake ladies were at home for the first round of the Top Club competition against Oxford City and County. The visitors included an England international. The Shiplake Singles and Pair both won and established a shot differential of 12 shots. A nail biting finish to the other two matches resulted in wins for the visitors but not by enough shots to achieve victory. Shiplake had never before beaten City and County in this competition but this year it is Shiplake who progress to the next round. They will play West Witney at home on June 17th.

On Tuesday afternoon Shiplake green was the venue for a ladies county match: Oxfordshire versus Hertfordshire. The OWBA president for is Shiplake member Mairwen West, and her team included five ladies from Shiplake and several others from south Oxfordshire clubs. The event was supported by many Shiplake members who worked hard beforehand to ensure an immaculate green and surrounds and to provide a delicious tea. Fine weather also contributed to the success of the event.
On Wednesday Shiplake welcomed Three Mile Cross for a six rinks game. Barry Lambourne, with Sonia Stretch, Alan Melville and Eddie Goddard, achieved the best score of the day, winning by 37 shots to 11. All the other rinks won, three by large margins, resulting in an emphatic win for Shiplake by 164 shots to 73.

Graham Kennedy’s rink took an early lead and won comfortably but as the match progressed the prospects looked bleak for Shiplake on the other rinks. Then Jim Bland, supported by Phil Buckett, Len Mitton and Les Redding, recovered from a poor start (4 shots on the first 10 ends) and won by 23 shots to 11, and Barrie Evans’ rink, having trailed throughout, snatched a win on the final end. Shiplake won by 85 shots to 68 and went home with 5 ODBL points.

On Wednesday Shiplake were at home to Wargrave. The weather was dull and cold, and the game was restricted to 16 ends. Wendy Cross, with Val Beaumont, Pat Main and David Webb, achieved the best score of the day, winning by 8 shots. David Hall’s rink had a close game, then scored 5 shots on the last two ends to win by 5 shots. But despite winning on 3 of the 5 rinks Shiplake lost the match by just one shot, scoring 64 shots to Wargrave’s 65.

On Saturday Shiplake welcomed Burghfield. Burghfield are new entrants to the MUL and this was their first MUL game. Shiplake skip Jim Bland, supported by captain David Steel and Charlotte Jacob, won by an impressive 28 shots. Shiplake was victorious on all five rinks, winning 115 shots to 50, and taking all 12 MUL points.

Iain Robinson’s rink had a close encounter, hanging on to win by just one shot. With a draw and 2 wins for Woodley the final result was victory for Woodley by 6 shots.

Shiplake travelled to Palmer Park for their first MUL game. First off at the end was Iain Robinson’s triple after an even game that finished 11 shots apiece and for a few minutes it looked as if that would be the best result for Shiplake. Then Graham Kennedy who, with Val Beard and captain David Steel, had led from the start saw off a late challenge to win by 18 shots to 14 and Jim Bland’s triple scored 3 shots on the last end to win by 2 shots. On Saturday Shiplake welcomed 6 triples from Great Hollands. Bill Blackmore handed in the best card of the day. Supported by Angie Main and Sonia Stretch the triple won by 19 shots to 14. Mick Lovejoy skipped his triple to a second win for Shiplake. Shiplake lost the match narrowly by 93 shots to 100.

On Sunday Shiplake were at home to the University of Reading. Skip Graham Kennedy, with Val Beard and David Steel, led from the start and had a comfortable win. David Bullock’s triple had a closer game but achieved a win. Despite strenuous efforts on the other rinks - Barry Lambourne’s triple scored 5 shots on the last end to lose by just one shot - there were no further wins for Shiplake. The University won by 92 shots to 84 and Shiplake took just 4 MUL points from the encounter.

On Monday evening Shiplake travelled to Blackbird Leys for the preliminary round of the ODBL cup. Both teams won on two rinks but Shiplake go on to the next round. They scored 69 shots against the opposition’s 63.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon Shiplake’s new season started with a five rink home game against Maiden Erlegh . The immaculate condition of the green, the surrounds and the clubhouse was a tribute to the hard work done over the winter by many club members. Skip Wendy Cross, supported by John Chamberlain, Max Jacob and Phil Buckett, achieved the best score of the day, winning by 20 shots to 11. Daphne Jacob also skipped her rink to victory. But with wins for the opposition on three rinks the final result was a win for Maiden Erlegh by 113 shots to Shiplake’s 77.

On Sunday Shiplake travelled to Caversham for a five rink Plomer Cup match. On two rinks Shiplake took the lead from the start and achieved impressive final scores. Jim Bland, supported by Margaret Bullock, Howard West and Wendy Cross won 41-14, and Barry Lambourne with Charlotte Jacob, John Snook and David Bullock won 35-13. With wins on two other rinks the result was an emphatic victory for Shiplake 143 shots to 82. The ten Plomer Cup points provide a good start for Shiplake in their defence of the Plomer Cup.

Shiplake member Mairwen West is President of Oxfordshire Womens Bowling Association for. This is a great honour for the club and means that Shiplake will be hosting several prestigious county events during the coming season.
