The final against Middlesex was a tighter game but the Shiplake four stayed in control. They went into the 20th end 10 shots up and scored 1 to win the championship by 11. The final score was 23-12.

Sunday was Finals Day at Shiplake. Fourteen finalists assembled for the last round of the competitions that had been underway since May. The good number of spectators who attended throughout the day were rewarded by some excellent bowling.

One finalist had reached four finals, which could not be accommodated in one day, so the Senior Citizens final had been played the previous Thursday evening. This 15 end match pitted husband against wife – Bill Blackmore against Sylvia Blackmore. All square after 10 ends, Sylvia then took the lead and won 14-8 with an end to spare.

First on the green on Sunday morning were the finals of the Mens and Ladies Singles and the Handicap.

The Mens Final was between Barry Lambourne and Ryan Buckett. Some excellent bowling saw Ryan soon moving into the lead, and after 16 ends he appeared on the verge of victory, leading 20-8. However Barry was not prepared to accept what seemed inevitable, and slowly clawed his way back into the game. The spectators held their breath as the score moved to an unbelievable 20 all. Barry then managed that vital last shot to become Mens Champion.

Howard West and Len Mitton were the finalists in the Handicap. 13 all after ten ends, Howard then moved up a gear to win 21-14.

The Ladies Final was between Sylvia Blackmore and Helen Robinson. Sylvia was in the lead almost from the start, but Helen remained in touch until, with the score standing at 15-13, Sylvia scored 7 shots in 2 ends to win 22-13 and the club had a new Ladies Champion.

The lunch time ‘entertainment’ was provided by the finals of the Plate and the Novices.

In the Plate husband and wife David and Margaret Bullock were in contention. David took an early lead but Margaret came back strongly, getting within two shots before David got the shots he needed to seal victory by 21 shots to 17.

Sylvia Blackmore’s third final was the Novices, where her opponent was Peter Higgs. After six ends Peter was 9-0 up, then Sylvia found the form that had taken her to victory twice already and went on to win 21-15.

In the afternoon the finals of the Two Wood, the Married Pairs and the Drawn Pairs took place.

Margaret Bullock’s second final was the Two Wood against John Chamberlain. Margaret took the first set 7-5. John fought back to 5-0 up in the second set then didn’t score another shot as Margaret took the second set 7-5 and thereby won the match.

The Married Pairs final pitted Val and Trevor Beaumont against Sylvia and Bill Blackmore. Despite fine bowling from all, the Beaumonts drew inexorably ahead and won the match 23-10.

The Drawn Pairs featured two losing finalists from earlier in the day – Ryan Buckett and Helen Robinson – against Handicap winner Howard West partnered by Jackie Stafford. Ryan and Helen soon built up a commanding lead but weren’t to have it all their own way as Howard and Jackie came back strongly. However 5 shots on the 20th end took Ryan and Helen to victory 25-16.
