Shiplake lost away to PEPPARD recently in the MUL/Plomer Cup by one shot but still managed to secure seven points to their hosts five, thanks to the triples of Alberto Perona, Barry Evans and Daphne Jacob with Len Mitton drawing his.

Shiplake travelled to CARTERTON for their first ODBL match on Thursday evening, but went down by 114 shots to 65, all six points going to the hosts. The Carterton squad, which is about four times the size of Shiplake’s, fielded a strong side laced with Middleton cup players, hosted the tie on a slow and spongy surface, and dominated the match from start to finish. It was a frosty welcome to division one for the visitors. The rink led by Barrie Evans did well from the start, but were soon overtaken, and eventually lost by 14 shots. The four of Alberto Perona, never got to grips with their opposition, and went down by 13. Jim Bland’s four never got going, and lost by 15 shots. Len Mitton’s rink however, led for most of the match, and only ran out of steam on the 17th end when they went behind for the first time, and in the end went down by seven shots

Losing by two shots and then one in recent league games Shiplake improved on Saturday by managing to draw against HURST in the MUL. Again, they managed to collect most of the points on offer (9-3), winning on four of the five triples. Daphne Jacob and Wendy Cross both won by eight; Peter Christmas by four and despite losing nine shots in the last three ends, Barry Evans ran out a winner by one shot.

Sunday saw Shiplake travel to GREAT HOLLANDS for a five triples mixed friendly, winning on four of the rinks and drawing the other (97-78). The visiting ladies had a field day with four lady skips: Jackie Stafford +5; Wendy Cross +1; Helen Robinson +4; Edna Orchard level and Graham Clinch +9.

Shiplake cruised to a 21 shot (94-73) victory when they entertained WARGRAVE in a five triples mixed friendly on a wet Wednesday evening last week. Wendy Cross and Graham Kennedy led their respective triples to 11 shot wins. Daphne Jacob scored two on the last end to win by that amount. David Bullock -2 and Barry Lambourne –1 were the other skips for the home side.

Saturday saw Shiplake play host to BURGHFIELD in a Manchester Unity League game and came out second best by 25 shots with the home side collecting five points to their visitors’ seven. Shiplake won two of the five rinks played with one drawn. Winning skips for the home side were Alberto Perona (four) and Wendy Cross (one).

Shiplake were entertained by WATLINGTON on Sunday in the Plomer Cup and although losing the match overall they shared the points (six apiece) by winning three of the five rinks. Again Alberto Perona and Wendy Cross repeated the day before, winning by five and two respectively with David Bullock also winning for the visitors by eight. The two winning skips for Watlington were Henry Franklin (15) and Bob Gilkes (two).

Last Wednesday Shiplake travelled to WOODLEY for a five rink mixed friendly and came away losers by 16 shots. Barry Lambourne’s rink took an early lead and never looked back, easing to a 10 shot victory. The only other winning rink for the villagers was skipped by Sylvia Blackmore, who was five shots down with four ends to play, scoring eight shots in those ends to win by three shots. The other Shiplake skips were Jim Bland -13; Graham Kennedy -10 and Len Mitton -6.

Having beaten Oxford City and County B and Banbury Central B in the first two rounds of the Oxfordshire & District League Cup, Shiplake travelled to CARTERTON for a quarter-final match, with a bare 16 players on a cold evening, anticipating a sound beating, but rose to the occasion and gave a good account of themselves, eventually going down by just four shots. The result underlined Shiplake’s promising start to the season, having gained promotion last year to the top league in the competition.

Shiplake entertained SUTTONS on Saturday in a four rink mixed friendly, sharing the rinks at two apiece but but winning the match overall by 20 shots, thanks mainly to the rink of David Webb who won by 24 shots with the home side front end completely outbowling their opponents. The other winning rink for the villagers was skipped by captain Wendy Cross who won by four shots.

Despite losing three of the five rinks, Shiplake managed to draw the match against ABINGDON on Sunday, in this mixed friendly. Again, Shiplake captain Wendy Cross was on the winning side, guiding here four to victory by nine shots. Sylvia Blackmore’s rink scored two shots in the last two ends to win by that amount after holding two shots on the last end to give the visitors victory, only for the hosts’ skip to draw second bowl.

April 24
Sunday last, saw Shiplake play their first match of the season, when they travelled to CAVERSHAM to play in the Plomer Cup, winning on three of the five rinks and losing the other two by one shot each. Trevor Beaumont and Graham Kennedy’s fours were run-away winners by 25 and 23 shots respectively; whilst Jim Bland’s won by a comfortable 10 shots. Captain Wendy Cross scored three on the last two ends to no avail, losing by the one shot. Daphne Jacob also suffered the same fate, losing by one on the last end.
