Henley came to Shiplake on Wednesday for an MUL match. On three rinks Shiplake led throughout, with Mairwen West, Peter Christmas and skip David Bullock recording the best win of the day, finishing 12 shots ahead. A six on the 16 th end helped Wendy Cross’s triple win by 2 shots and there was a dramatic finish to the game for Allen Newbury’s triple where they were eight behind with two ends to go, then scored a 3 and a 6 to win by one shot. So a clean sweep and 12 MUL points to Shiplake.

For Thursday’s ODBL game Shiplake travelled to Oxford City And County A . Peter Christmas, Alan Melville, David Hall and skip Ryan Buckett were the highest (and only!) winning rink. Barrie Evans’ rink had a close game and lost by just 2 shots. So Shiplake travelled home with only one league point.

On Saturday Shiplake took five rinks to Maiden Erlegh. Angie Main, Iain Robinson, Sylvia Blackmore and skip David Webb had the best result of the day for Shiplake, in the lead from the start they won by ten shots. There were good wins too for David Webb’s and Peter Higgs’ rinks, but Shiplake lost the match by 20 shots 100-120.

Shiplake’s in-house Drawn Fours was held on Sunday. At the end of the afternoon the clear winner of the six teams taking part comprised Angie Main, Chris Phillips, Howard West and Wendy Cross. Thanks go to Len Mitton for his efficient running of the day.

On Monday Shiplake hosted a ladies county game – between Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. The Gloucestershire ladies won the match. Shiplake’s Margaret Bullock was on Oxfordshire’s one winning rink. Thanks are due to the many Shiplake members who worked hard behind the scenes to ensure the day ran smoothly.

23 June

On Wednesday Shiplake took five triples to Pangbourne for an MUL match. The match was played under threatening skies, but the rain held off until everyone was off the green. Francis Benham, Peter Christmas and skip Wendy Cross were the highest winning rink, with a winning margin of 16 shots. Good wins on Trevor Beaumont’s and David Bullock’s rinks ensured a win overall on shots, and Shiplake travelled home with 8 MUL points.

For Thursday’s ODBL game Shiplake was at home to second in the league Headington A . Francis Benham, Alan Melville, David Bullock and skip Barry Lambourne had a comfortable win. Trevor Beaumont’s rink started well but couldn’t hold on to their first half lead. So just one winning rink for Shiplake, and one league point.

On Saturday Shiplake were away at Prospect Park for a game of six triples. The best score was on Jean Buckett, David Steel and skip Jim Bland’s rink, where they had a winning margin of 12 shots. There were two further winning rinks for Shiplake, but Shiplake narrowly lost the match 93-104.

On Sunday Shiplake entertained Trenthams for a six rink friendly match. The visitors may have gone away feeling it had been anything but friendly, as Shiplake won on every rink, leading to an emphatic victory of 158 shots to 90 in reply. Mairwen West, Eric Davis, Janette Macarthur and skip Bill Blackmore had the best score of the day, with a winning margin of 19 shots.

17 June

On Tuesday afternoon Shiplake entertained a group of ladies from Shiplake WI. Shiplake members took the visitors on to the green for an introduction to the sport and an hour or so’s friendly tuition. After this exertion everyone adjourned to the clubhouse for a cup of tea and delicious cakes which had been brought by the visitors.

Shiplake’s week continued on Wednesday with a cross town journey to Suttons for a six rink friendly match. Pat Walker, John Snook, David Steel and skip Jim Bland were the highest winning rink. Three more winning rinks contributed to the overall winning score of 127-119.

For Thursday’s ODBL game Shiplake was away at Carterton. After a tentative start John Chamberlain, Bill Blackmore, Graham Kennedy and skip Barrie Evans took the lead after 10 ends and finished with a winning margin of 10 shots. Jim Bland also skipped his rink to victory. Carterton won on the other two rinks and won the match by 5 shots, so Shiplake travelled home with just two ODBL points.

On Saturday Shiplake were at home for an MUL game against Goring. Jo Wylie, Wendy Cross and skip Jim Bland led from the start, and finished with a winning margin of 22 shots. Graham Kennedy’s rink also got off to a good start, leading 16-0 after 9 ends and finishing 24-11. Shiplake won the match 104 shots to 61, and three wins and one drawn rink gave them 9 MUL points.

Shiplake’s Sunday game was away at Broomwade. The glorious setting in the Hughendon valley and beautiful weather contributed to a very pleasant afternoon. A comfortable win for Jackie Stafford, Eric Davis, Sylvia Blackmore and skip Bryan Clark and two further wins by a margin of just one shot were not enough for overall victory. Shiplake lost by 96 shots to 100.

The first of 3 home games for Shiplake was on Wednesday when Island Bohemian brought six rinks to Memorial Avenue. Sonia Stretch, Eric Davis, David Webb and skip Barrie Evans won by an impressive 20 shots, the best score of the day. Altogether there were wins on 4 of the 6 rinks, and Shiplake won the match by 145 shots to 109.

On ThursdayShiplake ’s ODBL match was at home to Thame. The highest winning rink was that of Peter Christmas, David Bullock, Trevor Beaumont and skip Dave Hal. They were 23-0 after 8 ends, and went on to a massive win of 44 shots to 7. Two further wins - and all eyes were on Jim Bland’s rink where three shots on the last end took the final score to 22-20. So a clean sweep for Shiplake and 6 ODBL points.

Shiplake’s home game on Saturday was against Blackbird Leys. After 10 ends Shiplake were well ahead on 4 of the 5 rinks. At the end there were comfortable wins for skips Jo Wylie and Allen Newbury. On the other three rinks the visitors all lost by 4 shots! Shiplake won by 110 shots to 77.

On Sunday Shiplake took 6 rinks to the south of Reading, for a friendly match against Three Mile Cross. Peter Higgs skipped the highest (and only!) winning rink. Peter, with a trio of ladies - Julia Perry, Wendy Buss and Sylvia Blackmore – won by a margin of 17 shots. Shiplake lost the match by 97 shots to 139.

2 June

On Wednesday Shiplake were at home for an MUL game against Palmer Park. As the game started so did the rain, and after 10 ends (enough for the game to count) the captains ‘called it a day’ and everyone went into the club house for an early supper. Margaret Bullock, David Steel and skip Graham Kennedy won by 12 shots, the best score of the day. Narrow wins for all but one of the other triples ensured victory for Shiplake by 58 shots to 43, giving the home team 10 MUL points, revenge for the loss away at Palmer Park earlier in the season.

Thursday’s ODBL game was at home against Banbury Chestnuts, the team promoted to Division 1 along with Shiplake last season. Shiplake won an all rinks, with Iain Robinson, David Bullock, Trevor Beaumont and skip Jim Bland winning by 12 shots to take the title of highest winning rink. 6 well-earned ODBL points for Shiplake.

Shiplake’s third home game of the week was on Saturday against Rover (Cowley). Phyllis Mansfield skipped the highest winning rink. Phyllis, with Sonia Stretch, Max Jacob and Howard West trailed by 5 shots at the half-way point then the Shiplake rink went up a gear to win by 10 shots. The club won the match by 99 shots to 95.

On Tuesday Shiplake hosted a men’s county game between Oxfordshire and Bedfordshire. There were several Shiplake men in the OBA side. The result was in doubt almost to the last end, but Bedfordshire edged ahead to win by just 2 shots. The weather and the many Shiplake members who played their part behind the scenes contributed to a most enjoyable afternoon.

On Wednesday Shiplake had a 6 rink friendly at home to Three Mile Cross. The highest winning rink - Val Beaumont, Pat Steel, Bill Blackmore and skip Bryan Clark - soon built a commanding lead and won by 26 shots. Skip Roger Worth with Pat Walker, Janette Macarthur and Len Mitton scored a “hot shot” (all 8 woods counting). Each side won on three rinks but the overall score was in Shiplake’s favour - the club won 124 shots to 88.

Shiplake’s opening match in the first division of the ODBL was away against last year’s champions, Banbury Central A. Darren St. John, Allen Newbury, Jim Bland and skip Ryan Buckett were the only winning rink, winning by 3 shots. Defeats on the other three rinks meant Shiplake travelled home with just 1 ODBL point.

On Sunday morning Shiplake entertained a team of ladies from West Witney for the first round of the Top Club competition. Much to the relief of all, the heavy rain of early morning eased and most of the match was played in dry conditions. The Four had a good win, level for the first half of the game they gradually drew ahead to win by 15 shots. The Singles game went to the visitors. The Pair recovered from a slow start and went into the last end 17-17, but the visitors put the jack into the ditch, and that was that. The Triple also lost narrowly. Shiplake had a good run in this competition in 2007, but this year fell at the first hurdle and West Witney go into the next round.

20 May

Shiplake was at home on Saturday for an MUL game against Hurst. The highest winning rink was that of skip Dave Hall, with Francis Benham and Janette Macarthur. The contest on their rink was fairly even until the 12th end, after which the visitors failed to score and the Shiplake triple won by 9 shots. Barrie Evans’ triple won by 8 shots, despite losing five shots on the last end. A third win by just one shot plus one MUL point for drawing on shots gave Shiplake a total of 7 MUL points. (The Shiplake side was reduced to four triples after a Shiplake player was called away half way through the match, which meant Shiplake conceded 5 shots and 2 points.)

Shiplake’s Sunday game was a 5 rink friendly away at South Oxford. The highest winning rink was skipped by Shiplake President Howard West. Howard, with Ann Cox, Max Jacob and Sylvia Blackmore, established an early lead and went on to win by 13 shots. Good wins on the rinks skipped by Wendy Cross and David Webb contributed to the final result which was a win to Shiplake by 108 shots to 74.

On Wednesday Wargrave came to Shiplake for a friendly match of four rinks. Good wins on Roger Worth’s and Barrie Evans’ rinks ensured victory by 79 shots to 65.

Shiplake’s home advantage in the second round of the League Cup wasn’t of great benefit when they entertained last year’s league champions, Banbury Central A on Thursday. On three rinks the visitors established early leads and never looked threatened. Only Barry Lambourne, with Jo Wylie, David Webb and David Hall held their own, to win 19-11. The Banbury team move on to the next round.

Barry Lambourne also skipped his triple to an impressive win, 35-3. Two further wins ensured a win for Shiplake by a massive 138 shots to 50, and 10 MUL points.

Dave Hall, supported by Jo Wylie, Jackie Stafford and Peter Christmas, skipped the highest winning rink, with a score of 32 shots to 13. The two other winning rinks were both behind at 10 ends before drawing level and going on to win. Shiplake won the game 116-87, and returned home with 8 Plomer Cup points.

5 May

On Thursday Shiplake’s ODBL season started with the first round of the League Cup. Shiplake were at home to Hanborough. At the half way point Shiplake were behind on three of the four rinks, and if the threatening rain had curtailed the game then Shiplake would have been eliminated. However, the rain didn’t fall and the game proceeded to the full 18 ends, by which time Shiplake had caught up, to win the game by 67 shots to 53. The highest winning rink was that of Ryan Buckett, supported by Darren St John, Len Mitton and Roger Worth. The visitors led 9-5 after 10 ends, then didn’t score again, and lost by 16 shots. Shiplake progress to the next round, where they will be at home to Banbury Central A on May 8th.

29 April

On Wednesday Shiplake travelled to Palmer Park for their first MUL game. Having won the league last year Shiplake was keen for a good start but this was not to be. Jim Bland skipped the highest winning rink. With Wendy Cross and Francis Benham the triple had built a slender lead at the half-way point, then went up a gear to forge ahead and to win by 16 shots. With victory to Palmer Park on the other rinks Shiplake lost the match by 78 shots to 83 and went home with just 3 MUL points.

Great Hollands brought 6 triples to Shiplake on Saturday. David Bullock skipped the highest winning rink. David, with Phyllis Mansfield and Peter Higgs, achieved an impressive 28-8 victory. Peter Christmas skipped the only other winning rink. However close scores on the other rinks meant the final score was in Shiplake’s favour and they won by 107 shots to 91.

On Sunday Shiplake’s second game of the weekend was an MUL game against the University of Reading. Accolades for the highest winning rink went to skip Daphne Jacob, supported by Francis Benham and Peter Christmas, with a winning margin of 27 shots. All five Shiplake rinks achieved winning scores – final score 125 shots to 68, and 12 MUL points to Shiplake.

Shiplake’s first game of the 2008 season on Saturday was cancelled due to bad weather – but Sunday’s Plomer Cup game against Caversham went ahead in quite pleasant conditions – mild temperatures and even brief sightings of the sun. Four of the five rinks had comfortable wins. They established early leads and were never really threatened. The highest scoring rink was that of Barrie Evans with Helen Robinson, Peter Higgs and Allen Newbury who won by 29 shots to 13. The result was a win to Shiplake 119 shots to 78. Shiplake won the Plomer Cup in 2007 and this 10–2 win is a good start for Shiplake as they seek to repeat last year’s success.
