The green at Shiplake Bowls Club opened last Tuesday and on Saturday there was an in-house game between a captains select and a vice captains select side.
With a fine day and a fast green for so early in the year, it encouraged 30 enthusiastic members to enjoy outdoor bowling. The vice captains select won by 81 shots to 76 and Jim Bland accepted the Dickie Bird Cup from captain Peter Christmas.
The new season started on Sunday with a Plomer Cup match away at Caversham. The match was close until the half-way stage when Shiplake began to go into the lead on all rinks.
One rink surrendered three ends to go behind but scored one shot on the last end to secure a draw. The best performance was on rink three where the combination of Val Beaumont, Pat Main, Dave Webb and Trevor Beaumont won the last 11 ends to win by 32 shots to six. In a victory by 126 shots to 72 and 11 of 12 points, Shiplake made a good start in retaining the trophy.
