carve your words well
to cover the truth,
a thin layer of sense
to conceal the greater lie.

behind smiles and bright talk
depravity and despair
are hidden from view.
Potemkin would approve.

all praise the illusion
as cable and television
spins its pinwheel
to distract us with its colors.
