History
Craigentinny Bowling Club green is dominated by what is probably the most handsome, as well as the most costly sepulchral monument in Edinburgh. So grand and commanding is the edifice, that the Bowling Club incorporated it into the design of it's blazer and lapel badges and on it's headed stationery.
This is the Tomb of William Henry Miller of Craigentinny who wished to be buried in one of his own fields. It is ornamated with two beautiful sculptured marble panels known as “the craigentinny marbles”. The Tomb is based on a Tomb on the Appian Way at Rome and is located next to the car park at Craigentinny Bowling Club
Latest News from Craigentinny last updated 05/08/07 News for 2007 Season 05/08/07 The Top 5 team beat Gorgie Mills 3-2 to reach the semi finals. 04/08/07 The triple came up against Yoker in the semi finals but just never hit the heights of the previous days play on a very heavy rink. They battled away and stayed within touching distance and were only about 5 shots down with 3 ends to play but but just couldn't close the gap to beat them. Well done on getting that far! As it turns out, both the pairs and triples got beat by the eventual winners. Blaikie crowned himself the "Unofficial" Champion of Tanfield on the final day at Ayr in the Beer Tent after he had found out that Mally Higgenbotham had won the "Official" Tanfield championship. Blaikie is the only player to beat Mally this year on the Tanfield green (in the Edinburgh Top 5 singles!) 03/08/07 Both pairs and triples got through to the Quarter Finals. The pairs came up against Paul Foster and his partner and Paul's outstanding ability on the day was the difference and the Craigy pair were beat by 6 shots. The triples played against Mark Stenhouse from Methill and enjoyed a good 7-0 lead before falling behind 11-7, but came back to trail by 1 shot playing the last end. Craigy were holding the 2 shots required to win but Stenhouse drew the second shot leaving Big Dub with the last bowl. Without telling anyone what he was going to (he said because they would have talked him out of it!), he drove and halved the Methill bowl out the head to win the game. A courageous bowl it was called!! Blaikie is first home after falling asleep in McArthurs (see photos!) 02/08/07 AYR 2007 - for photos of Craigy on tour at the Scottish Championships 2007 check out the Photo menu on the left hand side or click here. Both pairs and triples got through their first games. 01/08/07 The 1st XVI got beat 5-4 at home to relegated Goldenacre. 6 points would have kept Goldenacre in the 1st Division, but Colin Hutchison's last bowl attempt just failed to get the 1 shot required. 29/07/07 John Fraser pairs winners : Gordon Bold and Davie Poole 28/07/07
Championship Final result 27/07/07 A hard fought and nerve racking victory gave the Cup Team a chance to make amends for the defeat in last years final as they overcame Hillside 8-4, with wins at home for Andrew Jeffrey and Gordon Bold backed up with away wins for Stuart Betts and Gary Nisbet. Although there were 4 rinks up, 2 of these rinks just held on at the end and could have went either way at the end. Leith now in the final on August 18th at Northern. 26/07/07 Andrew Caldwell wins through to the Quarter Finals of the Edinburgh Singles and John Shields, Stuart McFarlane and Craig McCall win through in the triples against Leith. 25/07/07 The 1st XVI league challenge is over after a 9-0 away defeat at Hillside. 24/07/07

20/07/07 A close call in the Quarter Finals of the Edinburgh Cup saw Craigy sneak through by 9 shots after the match finished 6 each on points..
Semi Final Draw for next Friday is : 18/07/07 Well done to the 2nd XVI who captured another Edinburgh Bowling League 1st Division title in style. They are about 100 point ahead with 2 games to go!!!! Although the 1st XVI won 7-2 at home against Pilrig, it is going to take a miracle to catch Parkside after they recorded another great 7-2 victory, this time away to Tanfield. Wins for Gordon Bold (against Scott Rogers), Ian Paterson (against Darren McKenny) and Kev McFarlane (against Chris Stevens) ensured the points and a last end defeat for Andy Jeffrey from Darren Grant gave Pilrig their 2 points. Shot of the week was played by Boldy - he had the last bowl of the end with 5 shots against. Scott Rogers decided to try and draw another shot (even though we had the best back 5 bowls), and he failed, but blocked the hand Boldy had just hit on. So, he changed his hand and hit the second shot onto the jack, the jack went in the ditch and Boldy's bowl run through to count 6. 13/07/07 A good 11-1 victory in the Edinburgh Cup against Blackhall set up a quarter final tie against Whitehouse and Grange next Friday. 11/07/07 A 5-4 away victory at the Dean wasn't good enough as Parkside got 9 points to create a big lead in the Edinburgh Bowling League 1st XVI Division 1 with only a few games to go. Well done again to the 2nd XVI after another 9-0 victory gave them an almost uncatchable lead. 08/07/07 News is just coming in that the Craigy Top 5 team has just defeated Tanfield away!! No further news has been received yet apart from Blaikie beat Mally. Here is Blaikie signing the scorecard with Mally after the game..... 07/07/07 Happy Hibs Day to everyone!!! 06/07/07 Craigentinny progressed to the next round of the Edinburgh Cup after a 10-2 victory over London Road Foundry. We won't mention who was the losing rink........ Happy Birthday to Blaikie who is 28 yrs old today........well that's what he says anyway! (I'm sure he had his 30th a few years ago.....) 04/07/07 A hard fought 7-2 victory away to Tanfield kept the 1st XVI in touch with leaders Parkside (even though they scored a 7-2 victory as well). Wins for Andy Jeffrey (against Cheggers), Stuart Betts (against Derek McLean) and Ian Paterson (against Stuart Cambpell) gave the points to Craigy with a defeat for Willie McDonald against the on-form Mally the only downside to the night. Well done to the 2nd XVI for a great 9-0 home victory against Tanfield which puts them in the driving seat for the title. 01/07/07 Top 5 report vs Ardmillan: Craig McCall got the visitors off the mark with a 21-9 win over Malcolm Clark but Ardmillan gave notice of a spirited challenge in the shape of 21-9 success for George Brews over Gary Nisbet. Kevin Hunter took heart from a late 4 to go on and put Craigentinny 2-1 up with a 21-15 win over Denis Kenny but the outcome was back in the melting pot when Ian Neill beat Eddie Tomany, 21-14. Craigentinny had an ace in the pack however in the shape of former Tait champion Ian Paterson and he turned up trumps with a strong finish from 13-15 to beat Roy Watson, 21-17. 27/06/07 The 1st XVI had a big game against Parkside at home knowing that a victory was essential to maintain the challenge in the 1st Division and a disappointing 5-4 defeat left a mountain to climb. The next 2 games are away to Tanfield and Dean which are never easy places to get points but I'm sure there are going to be some shock results before the season is finished......... 25/06/07 Club Fours Final Result

20/06/07 Another chance missed for the 1st XI to catch up with the leaders in the Edinburgh Bowling League at Postal with 2 rinks up and 2 down to win 5-4, although the 2 rinks got beat by 2 shots each. The 2nd XVI had another good 9-0 home win against Postal. 14/06/07 owls up!!). Craigy went into the last end 3 up and looked to have all eventualities covered but Alex's last bowl almost sneaked a 3, but in the end it was only 1 and Craigy progressed to play in the final at Bainfield next Thursday. 13/06/07 A poor away result at Goldenacre saw the 1st XVI lose 5-4. Pogo got beat 30-12 from Willie King after being 27-0 down after 11 ends! Big Dub got beat from Hutchy Jnr by 1 shot. Stu Fleming beat Hutchy Snr and Jeffs beat Wooly Pooly. 08/06/07 A great night at the District 11 Finals as the Pairs (Grant McLaren and Kev McFarlane) and Triples (Craig McCall, Gordon Bold and Willie McDonald) have qualified for the National Finals at Ayr. The triples always looked in control but faced a 6 against when 15-6 up with a bowl to come but a superb ditched jack by Willie stopped any chance of a comeback by Postal at that stage. The pairs had a close battle for most of the game against Blackhall but pulled away in the latter stages to make it a Craigy double! 07/06/07 ELBA - the Pair of Scotty Duncan and Kev Hunter have won through to the semi finals but the Triples failed at the quarter final stage. 06/06/07 Another good win the Edinburgh League as the 1st XVI beat Hillside 7-2 at home as the race hots up for the title! The 2nd XVI went down 5-4 at Hillside. 03/06/07 Scottish Fours Semi Final results Kev McFarlane 22 - 8 Willie McDonald 02/06/07 BREAKING NEWS!!!! Kevin Hunter has been snapped up on a free transfer by Tanfield as the mid season transfer window opened on Saturday. The deal was concluded at the end of the Hamilton Trophy game at Pilrig where ELBA Captain and Tanfield star, Mally Higgenbotham, is pictured with Blaike as he signs his contract. Speaking about the move, Blaikie said "I supported Tanfield as a boy and it's the only club I've ever wanted to play for." All the members of Craigy wish Blaike well in his new venture......... 01/06/07 Another great night in the District 11 qualifiers as the Pairs and Triples make it through to the final after winning convincingly in the semis at Dudley. 30/05/07 A great end to the 1st XVI match away to Pilrig saw Craigy come away with 5 points after it was looking like we would be lucky to get 2. With 10 shots in favour of Pilrig with 2 ends to go, counts of 6, 3, 3, 2 across the green gave the advantage to Craigy with 2 rinks still to play their last ends. Pilrig could still have stolen the aggregate point when Darren McKenny was holding 5 shots against Stuart Betts with 1 bowl left each to play. Stuart's last bowl looked tight from his hand (Davy Brown certainly didn't like it!) but it held a line and lay a couple of inches from the jack giving Darren an almost impossible shot. Kev McFarlane got a shot on his last end to make it a 7 shot victory overall. The second XVI kept their challenge going with a good 8-1 home win over Wardie. 29/05/07 A disappointing night for the Scottish Fours as they suffered a heavy defeat in the pouring rain at Pilrig. 25/05/07 Another good night in the Scottish District 11 qualifiers as the pairs and triples both make it through to the semi finals. The triples had an impressive victory in 12 ends against Tanfield. Updated some pics from Kinnoull. See Granty's big feet below!! 23/05/07 A magnificent 9-0 victory over top of the table Dean catapulted the 1st XVI up the table to be back in contention for the Edinburgh Bowling League 1st Division title. It was looking like the 9 points were likely at the midway point when all four rinks held commanding leads, but Willie McDonald had a disaster few ends to go from 10-1 up to 11-10 down, but soon recovered for a 20-12 victory to ensure the full 9 points stayed with the home team (of course being last off again!) The 2nd XVI suffered a narrow 5-4 defeat away at the Dean. 19/05/07 The majority of the 1st XVI were away today for the popular friendly against Kinnoull (Perth). Little known to Gordon Bold, a surprise 40th Birthday had been arranged on his return and everyone tried very hard to not let anything slip. I'm sure Blaikie almost gave the game away on the bus going there but recovered well to cover his tracks! A great day was had by all and a massive thanks to the Kinnoull boys for looking after us so well. There is now a tradition that the worst performing rink on the day has to got for a dip (or a paddle!) in the pond next to the bowling club. Check out the picture gallery!! Click on Granty's big feet for pictures of Kinnoull! 18/05/07 Good wins again for the Pairs and Triples in the District 11 qualifiers. 16/05/07 A disappointing result against Tanfield at home means that the 1st XVI are falling behind in the race to be Edinburgh's top club. Wins for Andy Jeffrey and Kev McFarlane were the highlights of the night, but crushing defeats for Stu Fleming and Willie McDonald from Mally Higginbotham and Keith Taylor meant the extra point went Tanfield's way. Rumour has it that a number of 1st XVI players said they would be dropped quite happily for next week after having poor games this week.......I'm sure this has nothing to do with the Champions League Finals......... 13/05/07 Some big seeds out of the Club Championship this week.....number 5 seed, Stuart Betts, was first to go on Monday night in a 21-12 defeat to Alan Moffat (unseeded). Next to go was top seed and last years champion, Andy Caldwell, who was beaten on his 21st Birthday from Craigentinny stalwart, Grant McLaren (number 7 seed). Finally, Kevin Hunter (Blaike), number 9 seed, was emptied by by the smallest man in bowls, Eddie Tomany (unseeded). Team news for the home game against Tanfield. 11/05/07 Good wins in the Scottish District 11 Qualifiers tonight as Grant McLaren and Kev McFarlane won in the pairs and Craig McCall, Gordon Bold and Willie McDonald beat a strong Hillside triple in the dark at LRF. 09/05/07 League Results 1st XVI Parkside 9 - 0
