Format The evening starts with a beginners' class where you’ll learn three or four moves step by step and link them all together so you can dance right through a song. This is followed by about 30 minutes of freestyle dancing where you can practice what you’ve just learnt. The intermediate class comes next and is more challenging but the moves are often loosely based on the earlier beginners' moves. For a while you may not get the hang of it but please feel free to ask any of the teachers, helpers or more experienced dancers to help later on. After this class will be more practice time with freestyle until the end of the evening.
Teaching Most of the instruction is to the man or leader, they will learn to understand what's being shown and told to them, and then lead the follower through the various moves.
The people Modern Jive appeals to all ages as the music played ranges from club to swing, Basement Jaxx to Bobby Darin. Everybody’s been a beginner and will understand that you may be nervous. Dance with as many people as you like, most will be more than happy to dance with you.
After all we’re
all here to do the same thing!
Workshops and events To help you to improve, we run weekend workshops. These will be advertised at jive evenings and here. We also plan some social events like Synchronicity and many dancers meet up to see local bands and have a dance. Ask people and they’ll fill you in on the details.
As you improve you may decide to go away to some of the many dance weekends held all over the country.
