The Spires & Beams Tour 2010
Empty Room Promotions generally promotes US acts that are on tour in the UK, playing a genre of roots based music called ‘Americana’. Every so often a chance comes up to put on outstanding artistes who transcend labels and musical categories. This is just such an occasion.

Steve Knightley and Phil Beer are widely acknowledged as the finest acoustic roots duo in England. Knightley, who writes most of their inspired material and Beer, a dazzling multi instrumentalist, have built up a huge following which has seen them sell out the Royal Albert Hall three times, headline major festivals from Glastonbury to WOMAD and playing all over the world, from Europe to America, Australia and India. Voted Best Live Act by the public at the 2004 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the jury is still out on just what kind of music they play. A genre defying mix of rock, roots, blues, country and trad, and often influenced by the music of other countries, it is played out on an array of instruments from slide guitar to fiddle, mandolin to South American cuatro.

As well as being part of Show of Hands, Steve and Phil both have successful musical careers in their own right. Phil Beer is much in demand as a session musician, and his other live shows include ‘Feast of Fiddles’ with Peter Knight and Dave Mattacks, ‘Ridgeriders’ with Ashley Hutchings and Chris While, and the ‘Phil Beer Band’. Steve Knightley was invited by Mick Jagger to work on the recording of the album, ‘Goddess In The Doorway’, and was also part of a collaboration with Martyn Joseph and Tom Robinson called ‘Faith, Folk & Anarchy’.

Miranda Sykes has been performing with Show of Hands since 2004, augmenting their unique sound with her powerful double bass and rich harmonies. As well as being a superb vocalist and double bassist she continues to surprise audiences with her musical versatility, and demonstrates her ability as a guitarist and interpreter of song, slipping effortlessly between genres. She has a strong repertoire of songs and is currently developing material for her 4th solo album project.

This year Show of Hands won two awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards as ‘Best Duo’ and ‘Best Song’ for ‘Arrogance Ignorance and Greed’.
Winner of two BBC Folk Awards 2009 – The Horizon Award for best new comer & Best Traditional Track Award Top 10 on the Mojo album of the year chart 2008 Jackie Oates is a singer and fiddle player hailing from Staffordshire. Her unique treatment of English ballads and songs, and pure, haunting singing style has attracted increasing attention.

Since appearing as a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards 2003, she has performed extensively at festivals and folk clubs across the country, in a solo capacity and with a number of bands. She was a founder member of Northumbrian group and Mercury nominated Rachel Unthank and the Winterset until early 2007.

‘Hyperboreans’ was the coming-of-age album for Jackie Oates. Produced by her brother Jim Moray and featuring a title track written for her by Alasdair Roberts, it sizzled with a new confidence and maturity. Her uniquely beautiful vocal came to the fore throughout the album adding a new freshness to her sound. The release of Hyperboreans in the UK was followed by Jackie’s first national tour of England in October/November 2009 with support from Arts Council England. The end of 2009 saw Hyperboreans receive a nomination for the fRoots Critics’ Poll Album of the Year and reach number 5 on the Mojo Folk Album of the Year Chart, Jackie also received three nominations for the 2010 BBC Folk Awards including Folk Singer of The Year, Album of the Year and Best Traditional Track for ‘Isle Of France’.
